MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team returns to Morgantown to open its 2021-22 home slate on Sunday, Oct. 10, against No. 6 Memphis at the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
Sunday's match against the Tigers is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET. Live stats and targets will be available on WVUsports.com. Admission is free and open to the public.
Following the conclusion of Sunday's contest, the top four shooters from each team will compete in an exhibition match.
"We're looking forward to starting our home season and competing on our Bill McKenzie range again," WVU coach Jon Hammond said. "Last weekend was a good start to our season, and we want to build from that this weekend.
"It's nice to have everyone back this weekend, and I know (sophomore) Molly (McGhin) and (freshman) Natalie (Perrin) are excited for their first college match of the season. I'm looking forward to watching them all compete and bring their best focus and intensity into the match."
West Virginia is 14-2 all-time against Memphis. WVU last shot against the Tigers in the regular season on Nov. 3, 2019, at the R.F. Fogleman Rifle Range in Memphis, Tennessee. The Mountaineers defeated the Tigers, 4714-4654, and captured a 2339-2306 score in smallbore and a 2375-2348 mark in air rifle.
Of note, former Mountaineer great and two-time individual NCAA champion Morgan Phillips returns to Morgantown to lead Memphis as the interim head coach on Sunday.
WVU picked up a pair of top-10 road victories last week to rise to the top of the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) national poll. The Mountaineers began the week by defeating then-No. 2 Ole Miss, 4733-4683, on Oct. 2, in Oxford, Mississippi. West Virginia then traveled to Murray, Kentucky, on Oct. 3, and defeated then-No. 8 Murray State, 4725-4674.
