Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 25-ranked West Virginia University men's soccer team fell to No. 4 Kentucky, 1-0, in double overtime on Tuesday night at Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
 
The Wildcats scored in the 105th minute to claim the golden-goal victory in the top-25 matchup. It marked just the second setback for the Mountaineers this season and first in non-conference action.
 
"We have to try to take the positives from a quality performance," WVU coach Dan Stratford said. "We have to take this on the chin and now show that there's no hangover from this. I thought we created enough to win the game, but it only takes one. We're disappointed in that regard, but this is only one moment."
 
The first half saw just six combined shot attempts between the two sides as scoring opportunities proved to be hard to come by in the early going. In the 42nd minute, fifth-year senior goalkeeper Steven Tekesky halted a big chance by UK, helping WVU reach the locker room for halftime unharmed.
 
The match was scoreless after 45 minutes.
 
In the second half, sophomore midfielder Ryan Baer fired a hard shot on goal in the 58th minute, causing the Wildcat keeper to protect the right post. Then, sophomore midfielder Ryan Crooks hit the post on an 80th-minute shot attempt, the Mountaineers' best chance of the evening.
 
Ninety minutes weren't enough to decide the match, as the Mountaineers entered overtime for the fifth time on the year. No shot attempts were recorded in the first, 10-minute overtime segment, before the hosts found the late winner in double overtime.
 
After junior midfielder Luke McCormick tallied a shot on goal in the 103rd minute, UK grabbed the winner two minutes later to secure the victory. In all, Kentucky held a 11-9 advantage in shots on the night, while the Mountaineers had nine corner kicks, to the Wildcats' three.
 
McCormick and redshirt sophomore defender Bjarne Thiesen each registered two shots to co-lead WVU, while Tekesky made three saves in goal.
 
Tuesday marked the first-ever meeting between West Virginia (7-2-4) and Kentucky (9-0-3). The two squads are set to become conference foes when the Mountaineers join Conference USA in 2022. It also marked the conclusion of the Mountaineers' four-match road trip.
 
Additionally, West Virginia fell to 2-1-1 against ranked opponents this season.
 
Next up, WVU returns home to take on Elon on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. It marks the club's first home game since Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
