MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following standout performances in the Backyard Brawl on Jan. 13-14, senior David Dixon and junior PJ Lenz of the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team have earned a pair of Big 12 Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Dixon was named the Co-Men's Swimmer of the Week, while Lenz collected the Men's Diver of the Week award. The duo collected West Virginia's first Big 12 honors of the season, as Dixon receives the award for the sixth time in his career and Lenz earns the recognition for the second time in his career.
"I am proud of David for receiving this honor," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "He continues to lead this team in the pool, and I am happy that the conference has noticed his leadership and recognized it accordingly."
"With the meet against Pitt being one of only a couple competitions available to the team this season, diligent application has become PJ's strongest commitment," diving coach Karla Helder said. "His passion for diving showed up in this first meet, which kept him focused on the standards set in front of him."
After collecting a pair of wins against Pitt, Dixon helped pace the Mountaineer men's team in their season-opening meet. He posted a time of 47.84 in the 100-yard butterfly, followed by a 1:44.25 showing in the 200 fly to earn his victories. A Richmond, Virginia, native, Dixon also was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that combined for a time of 2:59.46 to grab second place, while also helping the 200 medley relay team finish in third place (1:29.94)
Lenz set a program record on 3-meter springboard and earned a pair of wins on his way to earning Men's Diver of the Week. He notched a score of 396.98 to finish in second place and best the previous record of 390.80, set in 2018. The Prior Lake, Minnesota, native also collected a pair of wins in the men's platform (334.95) and 1-meter (363.23) events. Lenz led the way for a 1-2-3 Mountaineer finish on 1-meter.
The Mountaineers return to action when they host Notre Dame for a two-day dual meet to close regular-season action on Jan. 29-30, at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown. West Virginia will honor its 12 senior members as part of Senior Day, with competition beginning at 4 p.m. ET, on Friday, Jan. 29, and at 10 a.m. ET, on Saturday, Jan. 30.
