Mountaineers Defeat Bulls 5-2

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team defeated Buffalo, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Summit Tennis Academy, in Morgantown.
West Virginia got things rolling with a doubles win on court No. 1 from junior Anne-Sophie Courteau and freshman Kat Lyman, 6-2. Senior Sophia Duran and sophomore Nicole Roc followed up with a win on court No. 2, 7-6 (3), to secure the match's first point. Sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia and senior Christina Jordan fell, 7-6 (3), on court No. 3 to finish the doubles round.
"Buffalo is a tough team. Every year we have a very good battle with them," Mountaineer coach Miha Lisac said. "We knew they were going to come in here and battle and be loud, but I thought we competed well. I thought this was a step in the right direction for us."
The first win in singles came in the No. 2 slot from Courteau, as she defeated Emel Abibula in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Roc took care of business against Ambre Amat on court No.3 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win to put the Mountaineers up 3-0 in the team score.
Junior Giovanna Caputo secured the match in the No. 4 slot with a straight set victory of her own (7-5, 6-2).
At the No. 1 slot, Bovolskaia fell in a three-set tiebreaker against Pia Schwarz, 7-5, 3-6, 0-1 (9-11) to give Buffalo its first point of the match.
Lyman roared back for WVU in the No.5 spot by besting Azra Deniz Comlek in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
With the match long decided, Jordan battled in the No. 6 slot, but fell to Nikoleta Antoniou in consecutive sets (6-3, 6-4).
West Virginia returns to the Summit Tennis Academy tomorrow afternoon as the squad hosts George Washington at 12 p.m. ET.
