MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Coach Reed Sunahara of the West Virginia University volleyball team announced the addition of two spring semester transfers on Wednesday.
Emmy Ogogor, a native of San Antonio, Texas, comes to Morgantown from Illinois State and is available to compete in the fall of 2021 with three years of eligibility remaining. Alison Thomas, a native of Haymarket, Virginia, previously competed at Southern Illinois for two seasons (2018-19) before transferring to Cleveland State for the 2020 season. Thomas is currently enrolled as a junior.
"Emmy and Alison are both great additions to our 2021 class," Sunahara, who recently finished his fifth season at the helm of the Mountaineers, said. "Emmy played in a lot of matches against some really good teams last season. Her athleticism coupled with her strong work ethic makes for a lot of potential. Alison is determined to make us better. She brings good energy to the program and knows the game very well. I think they are both very eager to be a part of this team and help us succeed."
Ogogor played in all but one match for the Redbirds last season, covering 122 sets as a freshman. The middle blocker ranked second on the team in blocks (111), averaging 0.91 per set. She also finished fourth on the team in kills (192), averaging 1.57 per set, and turned in five double-digit kill performances.
While at Sandra Day O'Connor High, Ogogor, a first-team all-district nominee, led her team to back-to-back 6A Regional Championship titles (2018-19). Additionally, she was a three-year member of the track team and was named the Helotes High Jumper of the Year two years in a row (2017-18). Ogogor also earned academic all-district honors for her success in the classroom. The daughter of Chukwuma and Nkechi, she intends to major in exercise physiology.
Thomas saw limited action at Cleveland State last season, appearing in nine sets as a defensive specialist. She played her first two years at Southern Illinois and averaged 2.73 digs per set. She also combined for 36 service aces in two seasons.
While at Middleburg Academy, the two-time all-state honoree led her team to back-to-back state titles as a junior and senior. Thomas combined for 1,387 digs, 315 service aces and 229 kills during her high school campaign. The daughter of Robert and Kimberly, she intends to continue her major in sport management at WVU.
