MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After tallying three wins in two meets, redshirt senior diver Austin Smith of the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team has been named the Big 12 Co-Men's Diver of the Week, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Smith earns the bi-weekly honor for the second consecutive week, while the award also is the second of his career. The Fishers, Indiana, native also collected the accolade on Jan. 22, after he earned his first collegiate victory on 1-meter springboard at TCU on Jan. 18.
"This is a very well-deserved accolade for Austin after his great performances on senior day," diving coach Michael Grapner said. "His hard work and determination are paying off. I'm thrilled with his progress this season, and I'm excited to see what he can do at the conference and zone meets."
In the final two meets of the regular season, Smith tallied a trio of wins on 1- and 3-meter springboard. His first victory came in WVU's mid-week dual against Villanova on Jan. 30, as he tallied a score of 304.58 on 1-meter to grab first place.
On Feb. 1, Smith closed the regular season against George Washington with a pair of victories on 1- and 3-meter, the first event sweep of his career. He earned marks of 307.35 on 1-meter and 344.18 on 3-meter to secure the victories. His score on 1-meter against the Colonials also marks a new career best.
All three of Smith's winning scores were NCAA Zones-qualifying marks. With the wins, Smith now has four total victories in his collegiate career.
West Virginia closed the regular season with dual meets on Jan. 30 against Villanova and on Feb. 1 against George Washington. The Mountaineer men earned two victories to close the season, beating the Wildcats, 195-96, and topping the Colonials, 178-118. The women's team fell to Villanova by a score of 156-144, but the squad earned a bounce-back victory over George Washington, 162-138, on Feb. 1.
The Mountaineers return to action from Feb. 26-29 for the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship, held at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown. WVU is tabbed to host the conference championship for the first time in program history.
