Mountaineers Defeat Akron, Remain Undefeated

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team defeated Akron, 5-2, on Sunday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Akron, Ohio.
"It was a good weekend of competition to build upon going back home to face Cornell next weekend," WVU coach Miha Lisac. "The team found a way to pull together in competitive situations."
West Virginia hit a roadblock to begin Sunday's contest, as the Zips swept doubles play to claim the first team point and take an early advantage over the Mountaineers. Akron won the doubles round by scores of 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2.
After a rocky start in doubles, the Mountaineers responded in strong fashion in singles play, winning five of six matches.
Junior Anne-Sophie Courteau claimed the No. 1 match, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Kat Lyman also claimed a two-set victory for West Virginia in the No. 3 slot, 6-3, 7-5.
In the No. 2 slot, junior Giovanna Caputo battled against Miruna Vasilescu in three sets. After claiming the first set, 6-2, Caputo dropped the second frame, 2-6, as the match went to a tiebreaking third set. After the final set was tied at 6-6, Caputo took the deciding point to win the match.
Sophomore Nicole Roc also found herself in a tiebreaker in the No. 4 position. Roc won the first set, 6-3, before dropping the second set by the same score. Roc took the final frame, 6-3, to seal the victory.
In the No. 5 slot, senior Sofia Duran claimed the Mountaineers' third two-set victory, 6-3, 6-2, to seal the match for WVU. Senior Christina Jordan fell in the final singles match in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 2-6.
West Virginia returns to Morgantown on Sunday, Feb. 23, as the Mountaineers prepare to host Cornell at the Summit Tennis Academy. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.
