MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team began the 2020 spring season with a win on Friday evening, as the Mountaineers defeated Towson, 7-0, at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
"It's been kind of a long for us, in terms of dealing with the flu," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "Maybe, we're not as healthy as we want to be going into the first match, but I thought everybody did a good job of staying focused on the things they could control today. We came out and executed what the plan was. So, I thought we did a good job, considering the circumstances."
West Virginia began the match in strong fashion in doubles play, winning all three matches. Junior Giovanna Caputo and sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia defeated Lauryn and Elessa Jacobs, 6-0, to finish first, before junior Anne-Sophie Courteau and freshman Kat Lyman defeated Themis Haliou and Amelia Lawson, 6-1, to take the doubles point for WVU.
Seniors Sofia Duran and Christina Jordan also won their match against Jessica Assenmacher and Alexa Martinez, 6-2. WVU led Towson, 1-0, at the start of singles play.
Lyman took the first match for WVU in singles from the No. 4 slot, as she defeated Phoebe Collins in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Bovolskaia finished shortly after in the No. 1 slot, downing Haliou in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Mountaineers led Towson, 3-0.
In the No. 2 slot, Courteau earned a two-set win over Lawson, winning 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the Mountaineers' first win of the season. The remaining matches from the No. 5 and 6 slots were played out.
Caputo took her match against Martinez in two sets, 6-2, 7-6. Caputo won the second set by a 7-2 tiebreaker.
Duran captured WVU's sixth team point from the No. 5 slot, as she defeated Sarah Pospischill in two sets, 6-4, 6-0, before Jordan completed the sweep from the No. 6 position. Jordan defeated Assenmacher, 6-2, 6-2.
West Virginia returns to the Summit Tennis Academy on Sunday, Feb. 2, as the Mountaineers prepare to host Toledo at 10 a.m. ET.
