WVU Opens Spring Against Tigers, Rockets

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team opens its spring schedule this weekend at home against Towson on Friday, Jan. 31, and Toledo on Sunday, Feb. 2, after a two-month break in play.
"This is an exciting time of the year for us," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "We are all looking forward to starting the spring season and the journey toward what could be a historic season for our program. With goals to qualify for national-level tournaments, we are looking to put our program on the map."
The weekend duals will kick off on Friday at 5 p.m. ET, against Towson at the Summit Tennis Academy.
The Mountaineers lead the series against the Tigers 3-0 all-time, with their first meeting occurring in 2015 in Morgantown. West Virginia looks to keep their win streak going against the Tigers with their most recent win occurring in 2019 by a score of 7-0.
Towson enters the match with a 1-2 record with a win over Saint Francis, 4-3, and losses to Virginia, 7-0, and Maryland, 6-1.
West Virginia finishes the weekend with a Sunday morning matchup against Toledo at 10 a.m.
In the series against the Rockets, the Mountaineers lead the series 8-1, with WVU's most recent win coming in 2016 by a score of 6-1 in Morgantown. The Rockets attended the Thunder in the Mountains tournament this past fall in Charleston, West Virginia, but they didn't see any action against the Mountaineers.
Toledo comes Morgantown with a 1-1 record with a win over Youngstown State, 4-3, and a loss to Marshall, 5-2.
NOTES: The 2019-20 season marks the 47th year of competition for Mountaineer tennis, with the first season in 1974 ... WVU holds an all-time record of 485-475-1 ... coach Miha Lisac enters his seventh season at the helm for the WVU tennis program ... Lisac is 39-80 at West Virginia and 101-136 during his 12-year coaching career ... WVU returns six letterwinners, including seniors Sofia Duran and Christina Jordan ... junior Anne-Sophie Courteau leads the Mountaineers with 77 career wins ...
