Mountaineers Finish Weekend at William & Mary

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team won five total matches in the finale of the William Mary Hall of Fame Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Virginia.
"It was a good finish for us in the tournament with good competitive matches on hand," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "We finished the weekend well, and we're excited to head home and get ready for the Martha Thorn Invitational."
Doubles Recap
In the final round of doubles, West Virginia split two matches between Miami (Fla.) and Liberty.
Juniors Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau fell to Miami's Nada Dimovska and Lucia Marzal Martinez, 3-8, but sophomores Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Nicole Roc finished doubles in strong fashion, as they defeated Liberty's Nasha Ghajar and Kelly Lewis, 8-3.

WVU won four out of its last five matches in singles play to cap tournament action in Williamsburg, as the Mountaineers squared off against VCU.
Courteau went toe-to-toe with Luminita Tutunaru in WVU's first singles match of the day. After claiming the first set, 7-5, Courteau dropped the second set, 3-6, as Tutunaru forced the super tiebreaker. In the final frame, Courteau sealed the victory, claiming the third set, 10-8.
Caputo bagged a win over Gabriela Ana-Maria Davidescu. The junior won the first set, 6-3, before Davidescu retire early to yield the match.
Freshman Kat Lyman continued her early-season success against Melissa Ifidzhen. Lyman defeated Ifidzhen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to win WVU's third consecutive match in the final round of singles.
Roc suffered a setback in her match against Noumea Witmus. The sophomore fell to Witmus in two sets, 2-6, 3-6.
In the final match of the tournament, Bovolskaia squared off against Paula Onita. Bovolskaia claimed the first set, 6-4, and would claim WVU's fifth and final win of the day after Onita retired early.

Following two weeks off from competition, West Virginia returns to Morgantown to host the Martha Thorn Invitational from Oct. 18-19 at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts.
