Mountaineers Sweep Blue Hens on Day One

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by a sweep of Delaware in doubles play, the West Virginia University tennis team won five total matches in the Martha Thorn Invitational opener on Friday afternoon at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
"We had a very good day in doubles today," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "The aggressiveness was good across the board, and we stuck with the game plan well."

The Mountaineers started things off strong in the morning session of Friday's tournament opener, as they took all three doubles matches from the Delaware Blue Hens.
Junior Anne-Sophie Courteau and freshman Kat Lyman began the run with a 6-3 victory over Caragh Courtney and Jojo Bach.
In the first appearance of her senior season, Sofia Duran paired with sophomore Nicole Roc and collected WVU's second win of the day, as they defeated Viva Laas and Eliza Askarova, 6-4.
Junior Giovanna Caputo and sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia defeated Sarah Whited and Alexandra Vesikallio, 6-4, to complete the sweep of UD.

In the first round of singles, West Virginia went toe-to-toe with Ball State and won a pair of matches.
Courteau bagged the Mountaineers' first singles win of the day against Amy Kaplan. The junior was victorious in the first set, besting Kaplan 6-4. A back-and-forth second set followed until Courteau and Kaplan were tied at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Courteau secured the match by winning the deciding point, 7-2.
Caputo fell in the second singles match, as the junior dropped her match to Victoria Sec in two sets, 4-6, 3-6.
Lyman continued her impressive start to her college career against Jessica Braun. After dropping the first frame, 4-6, Lyman rebounded to take the second set, 6-4, and force a super tiebreaker. In the deciding frame, the freshman defeated Braun, 10-6, to remain undefeated in singles play.
West Virginia dropped the final three matches to close out singles play against the Cardinals.
In a three-set battle, Roc was defeated by Rebecca Herrington, 4-6, 6-3, 6-10, before Bovolskaia fell to Livia Lukacs in two sets, 4-6, 4-6. Duran suffered a setback against Emma Peeler, 3-6, 0-6, to close out singles action.
