
WVU Opens Fall Season in Charleston

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team travels to Charleston, West Virginia, for its first action of the fall tournament season at Thunder in the Mountains, from Sept. 20-22.
Each day of the tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. ET and will take place at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts in Charleston. Score updates will be provided by Marshall University and will be posted on HerdZone.com throughout this weekend's tournament.
"We are looking forward to getting the competitive part of the fall semester under way," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "It will be a good tournament for us to get some competition in this weekend."
Thunder in the Mountains is the first collegiate invitational women's tennis tournament jointly hosted by WVU and Marshall. The Mountaineers and Thundering Herd welcome four teams to the West Virginia state capital this weekend – Akron, James Madison, Toledo and Youngstown State.
In Friday's tournament opener, WVU is set to square off against JMU and Marshall in doubles. The Mountaineers will round out the first day in singles play, when they take on Akron.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers will go toe-to-toe with Akron in doubles play and face James Madison in singles play.
Following the conclusion of Saturday's matches, WVU and Marshall will host a kids' clinic at 5 p.m. ET at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts.
For Sunday's tournament finale, West Virginia will face off against its co-host and in-state foe Marshall in singles play to cap the tournament.

NOTES: The 2019-20 season marks the 47th year of competition for Mountaineer tennis, with the first season in 1974 ... WVU holds an all-time record of 485-475-1 ... coach Miha Lisac enters his seventh season at the helm for the WVU tennis program ... Lisac is 39-80 at West Virginia and 101-136 during his 12-year coaching career ... WVU returns six letterwinners this, including two seniors - Sofia Duran and Christina Jordan ... junior Anne-Sophie Courteau leads the Mountaineers with 58 career wins ... Courteau also leads the team with 30 doubles victories ... junior Giovanna Caputo leads WVU in singles wins, with 33.
