MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team earned a fourth-place finish at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday morning in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Junior Bree Warren paced the Mountaineers with a ninth-place finish. In her first race of the season, the Belgrave, Australia, native crossed Penn State's Blue-White Course finish line in a 6k time of 21:32.20 to place in the top 10.
The Spiked Shoe Invite marked the collegiate debut for redshirt freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden, who finished in 25th with a time of 22:24.00.
"It was nice to see a few new faces in the lineup today," coach Sean Cleary said. "Bree ran her usual come-from-behind race and was rewarded with a time approximately a minute faster than last year at the same meet. Mikenna and Peyton (Kukura) also did a nice job today. For Mikenna, this was her first cross country race in three years, and she will take away a positive vibe.
"We can now go back home and put in a good block of training as we prepare for October. We will bring out almost the entire roster next week in a low-key meet at Lehigh."
Redshirt freshman Peyton Kukura finished in 29th with a time of 22:33.60, closely followed by redshirt sophomore Marianne Abdalah in 30th (22:45.20). Redshirt freshman Amber Dombrowski registered a time of 23:14.10 to finish in 38th.
Redshirt freshman Malina Mitchell also competed for the Mountaineers and came in 40th, tallying a time of 23:30.90.
Friday's field featured 47 runners representing five different schools. WVU notched 104 points as a team to earn fourth place. Georgetown took the victory with 25 points, followed by No. 14 Penn State (41) in second.
The University of Guelf tallied 75 points, claiming third place, while WVU and Saint Francis (145) rounded out the team standings.
Friday's race marked WVU's eighth consecutive trip to the Spiked Shoe Invitational. It also was the team's 10th time competing in University Park since 2014. WVU is scheduled to return to the home of the Nittany Lions on Friday, Oct. 18, to race in the Penn State National Open.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Sept. 20, at the Lock Haven Invitational in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.
