MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the eighth consecutive season, the West Virginia University cross country team travels to compete in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, on Friday, Sept. 13, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
The women's 6k race is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. ET, at Penn State's Blue-White Course.
"Heading off to Penn State, we are looking forward to going back to a familiar venue," Mountaineer coach Sean Cleary said. "We will be racing a very similar roster to the Lehigh Invitational, but with the addition of (junior) Bree Warren. After this race, we will have a lot more information as to where we sit as a program."
West Virginia is one of five teams competing in the Spiked Shoe Invitational. Friday's field is comprised of host Penn State, Georgetown, Guelph and Saint Francis. The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 14 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCCCA) National Coaches' Poll and No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The Mountaineers have grown accustomed to the Blue-White Course over the years, as this weekend marks WVU's 10th time competing in University Park since 2014. Friday's trip is the first of two visits to Penn State this season, as the team is set to return for the Penn State National Open on Oct. 18.
WVU opened the 2019 season on Aug. 30 with a third-place showing at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Mountaineers were led by redshirt senior Olivia Hill, who placed second (21:57.36), and redshirt sophomore Marianne Abdalah, who finished in fourth (22:18.23).
Three redshirt freshmen made their collegiate debuts at Lehigh, as Malina Mitchell crossed the finish line in 22:51.27 to earn 11th place. Mitchell was followed by Peyton Kukura (25th – 23:31.25) and Amber Dombrowski (31st – 24:10.07).
Last year at the Spiked Shoe Invitational, the Mountaineers took fifth place, led by then-redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills, who notched an 11th-place finish. Wills tallied a 6k time of 21:28 and was one of three top-30 finishers for WVU.
The Mountaineers also placed sixth at the Penn State National Open and the Mid-Atlantic Regional, each held at the Blue-White Course, in 2018.
