WVU Announces Preseason Scrimmage at Canisius
August 23, 2019 12:38 PM | Volleyball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team has announced a preseason scrimmage against Canisius on Saturday, August 24. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, New York.
Saturday marks the Mountaineers' lone exhibition match leading up to the 2019 season opener at Delaware on Aug. 30. WVU wrapped up preseason camp on Tuesday under the direction of fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara.
"We had a good preseason, and I'm excited to see that translate on the court this weekend," Sunahara said. "We're getting better every day, but we still have a long way to go, so tomorrow's scrimmage will be a good way to measure where we are at this point in the season."
The Mountaineers return to the court following an 11-win campaign in 2018. With WVU only losing one starter from its 2018 roster, the Mountaineers look to make great strides this season.
Senior Katelyn Evans led the squad with 3.17 kills per set last season, while junior Katie DeMeo led the team's blocking efforts with 1.27 blocks per set to rank fourth in the Big 12 Conference. Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas will return to court as a team co-captain alongside seniors Gabrielle Cuckovich and Erin Slinde. Additionally, West Virginia welcomed two newcomers to its squad in the offseason: redshirt junior transfer Audrey Adams and freshman Natalie Winter.
Canisius, which is led by fourth-year coach Lenika Vazquez, enters the 2019 season ranked No. 1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Preseason Coaches' Poll. Additionally, senior Leah Simmons was selected as the conference's 2019 Preseason Player of the Year, while classmate Cassidy Ceriani was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. The Golden Griffins finished 17-12 last season and reached the championship match of the conference tournament.
Following Saturday's preseason matchup, West Virginia will open its regular season with three consecutive weekends on the road, starting with the Delaware Classic in Newark, Delaware, on Aug. 30-31. While in Delaware, WVU will take on host Delaware on Aug. 30, followed by Coppin State and Binghamton on Aug. 31.
