ATHENS (Aug. 11, 2019) – After wrapping things up in Rome, the West Virginia University women's basketball team embarked on the second leg of its European tour when the team trekked 265 kilometers south to Sorrento.
Members of the Mountaineer Athletic Club toured the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona in Rome on Wednesday. The team was given a day of rest before taking the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona, as well as some shopping, later that evening.
On Thursday, the travel party departed for Sorrento. To break up the three-and-a-half-hour drive, the bus made a pit stop for lunch in Ercolano, on the foot of Mount Vesuvius, for a leisurely lunch of antipasti and Margherita pizza – which originated in nearby Naples.
After taking in the food and the views, the Mountaineers made their way to Pompeii. With the help of two tour guides, the players, staff and supporters spent two hours touring the ruins. Sites to see included restaurant remains, shops, temples, statues, pottery and even the casts of some humans and animals, all of which was preserved under volcanic ash after the volcano erupted in 79 AD.
Upon arrival in Sorrento, the party was taken to Via San Cesareo. Everyone was able to shop and eat in the heart of old town before heading to rest after a long day of travel and touring.
Before using the pool for leisure, the players used it for conditioning as strength and conditioning coach Zach Allen put them through a workout Friday morning. Most of the Mountaineers used the afternoon to sit by the hotel's beautiful pool, while other members of the travel took the ferry over to Capri to sample the seafood and shopping.
Friday's dinner took place at Marina Grande in Sorrento, at a restaurant on the waterfront. After a meal of truffle pasta and steak, a local busker serenaded the team while they enjoyed Chantilly cake. They soon turned the tables on him and sang "Country Roads" to cap the meal.
The team was set to practice on Saturday in nearby Vico Equense. However, bussing along the narrow village roads proved to be quite a feat. The local police joined in the efforts and the team arrive safely to the gym where the Mountaineers spent part of the morning.
On their final evening in Sorrento, West Virginia attended a pizza-making class at a local cooking school. The players made fresh dough using flour, yeast, olive oil and water. They added toppings to their pie and watched as they were put into the brick over. All Mountaineers were able to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
The travel part bid farewell to Italy early Sunday morning, hopping a flight to Athens out of Naples. The Mountaineers arrived in Greece in the afternoon and were set to practice before taking on the Greek National Team on Monday.
