MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt junior Andrea Pettit of the West Virginia University cross country and track and field teams has been named to the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The honor is the first of Pettit's career. The Morgantown, West Virginia, native was previously named an all-district selection on May 28.
Pettit's recognition also marks the cross country/track and field program's 19th Academic All-American since 2008 under coach Sean Cleary. The teams have now had at least one Academic All-America selection for five consecutive years and 10 of the last 11 years.
"What a fitting accomplishment for such a terrific young woman," Cleary said. "Ande has done an excellent job representing her hometown and state with great pride throughout her career, both academically and athletically. We can't wait to see what her very bright future has in store for her."
Pettit graduated summa cum laude with a degree in immunology and medical microbiology in May. She maintained a 4.0 GPA and was featured on the President's and Dean's Lists. Pettit also was named a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, and she received WVU's top student honor, the Order of Augusta.
The 2019 WVU Outstanding Senior Award recipient is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection in both cross country and track and field, and she is a recipient of the Big 12's Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the conference's highest academic honor.
Pettit was an Honors College member and has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's and Garrett Ford Academic Honor Rolls. Additionally, she served as the community service chair for WVU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was treasurer of West Virginia's Alpha Epsilon Delta chapter.
Pettit will pursue a master's degree in primary care research at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England, beginning in the fall.
