June 20, 2019 01:21 PM | Volleyball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Director of Athletics Shane Lyons announced the 2019 West Virginia University volleyball schedule on Thursday.
The slate features 11 home matches for the Mountaineers, as well as three-day non-conference tournaments in San Diego (Sept. 5-7) and Honolulu (Sept. 12-14). Five matches will be played against opponents who qualified for the 2018 NCAA Tournament, while a pair of contests will be played against teams who received bids to the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
"It's going to be an exciting year," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "This year's preseason schedule is very competitive, so we will find out quickly where we are as a team. We play back-to-back at San Diego State, and then we are going straight to Hawai'i. We're excited about playing at Hawai'i. It's one of the best atmospheres in college volleyball, so we'll get to play in front of a great crowd. It's an opportunity to get better, and hopefully, these tournaments help us prepare for the Big 12 season down the road."
West Virginia opens the season with three consecutive weekends on the road, starting with the Delaware Classic in Newark, Delaware, on Aug. 30-31. While in Delaware, WVU will take on host Delaware on Aug. 30, followed by Coppin State and Binghamton on Aug. 31.
The Mountaineers will remain on the road, as they travel west to San Diego for a three-day tournament at San Diego State, from Sept. 5-7. West Virginia will face Arkansas on Sept. 5, San Diego State on Sept. 6 and Arizona on Sept. 7. Arizona finished the 2018 season ranked in the top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll after qualifying for the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Following their weekend in San Diego, the Mountaineers will head to the University of Hawai'i for the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge on Sept. 12-14 in Honolulu. WVU opens play against Hawai'i, a 2018 NCAA-qualifying team, on Sept. 12, followed by a match against UCLA on Sept. 13. The squad concludes play on Sept. 14, as it takes on Utah Valley, a 2018 NIVC-qualifying team, before heading back to Morgantown for its final tournament of the season.
Of note, WVU will face all three teams in Hawai'i for the first time in program history. Sunahara, a native of Hilo, Hawai'i, was a two-time All-American and three-time NCAA Champion at UCLA.
The bulk of the non-conference slate wraps up in Morgantown, with a three-match tournament on Sept. 20-21. West Virginia welcomes Duquesne, Eastern Kentucky and Navy to the Mountaineer Invitational, as the squad squares off with the Duquesne Dukes on Sept. 20 before facing the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Sept. 21. Saturday evening's finale will be a showdown between the Mountaineers and the Navy Midshipmen, a team that qualified for the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
West Virginia will once again have 16 conference matches, with WVU opening its Big 12 Conference schedule at Texas Tech on Sept. 25.
After the trip to Lubbock, Texas, the Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum and play host to Oklahoma (Sept. 28) and Iowa State (Oct. 5) before hitting the road for five of their last seven matches in October.
The road trip starts with a two-match swing through Kansas, as West Virginia goes head-to-head with Kansas on Oct. 10 and Kansas State on Oct. 12.
On Oct. 15, West Virginia will make the short drive to Morehead, Kentucky, to face Morehead State in its final non-conference match of the season.
Resuming Big 12 play, the Mountaineers will host perennial national powerhouse Texas on Oct. 19 before two-stepping through Texas for matches at TCU (Oct. 24) and Baylor (Oct. 26). The team then caps the month of October by welcoming Kansas State to the WVU Coliseum on Oct. 30.
November kicks off with a match at Texas on Nov. 2, followed by a trip to Ames, Iowa, on Nov. 6, for a match at Iowa State.
WVU returns home for four of its last five matches of the 2019 season, starting with TCU on Nov. 13 and Texas Tech on Nov. 16. West Virginia will then close its road slate with a contest at Oklahoma on Nov. 22 before making its way back to the WVU Coliseum to welcome Baylor (Nov. 26) and Kansas (Nov. 30) the week of Thanksgiving to cap its regular season.
The 2019 NCAA Volleyball Championship First and Second Rounds will be Dec. 5-7 on campus sites, with the Regional Rounds, on Dec. 13-14, also on campus sites. PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh will host the NCAA Volleyball Semifinals and Championships on Dec. 19 and 21, respectively.
