MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene claimed his third top-10 finish of the season to lead the West Virginia University golf team at The Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina, on Sunday.
Sharpstene tied for seventh place, marking his third straight top-15 finish as he led the Mountaineers to a sixth-place team finish. After shooting 282-286, WVU shot a tournament-low 281 in the third round to finish with a three-round total of 849 for three-under par. UNCG took home the team title at 18-under par (834), while Ohio State was the runner-up at 10 under (842). Big 12 foe Kansas came in third at nine under (843).
After shooting 69-71 on the first day of action, Sharpstene carded a birdie and a bogey on the front nine before adding two more birdies on the back nine. He finished at two-under with a 69 to shoot four under in the tournament with a 54-hole total of 209.
Juniors Etienne Papineau and Philipp Matlari posted matching scores of 71-72-71=214. The duo tied for 28th place at one-over par.
Senior Max Sear posted a trio of birdies in the third round, but five bogeys put him at two-over par with a 73. His three-round tally of 71-71-73=215 put him tied for 34th at two-over par.
After shooting 76-78 on the first day of play, sophomore Logan Perkins rebounded on the final day to move up 12 spots and into 74th place. Despite a trio of bogeys, Perkins registered four birdies to shoot one-under par with a 70, putting his three-round score at 224 for 11 over.
"Today was a gutsy effort from the guys," coach Sean Covich said. "We didn't have our best stuff this week, yet we got some solid rounds today. I'm proud of Logan; he really struggled yesterday and could have folded but he bounced back and contributed today. Sharp continues to play at a high level. That kid will be special by the end of his career. Philly and Pap played a lot of good golf this week, and really proud of them. Max is so close to putting it together. I have a feeling he'll peak at the right time for us."
West Virginia will close out the regular season at rival Penn State when the Mountaineers take part in the Rutherford Intercollegiate from April 13-14.
