
WVU Opens Mountaineer Showcase

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team opened the State Farm Friends of Track and Field Mountaineer Showcase with two victories at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park on Friday night.
Competing in the team's second home meet of the outdoor season at the new facility, which officially opened in October 2018, the Mountaineers enjoyed victories by redshirt senior Bria Welker in the 100 meters and redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson in the 1,500 meters.
In all, WVU competed in four events on the opening night of the two-day competition.
Welker crossed the finish line in 12.80 to win her collegiate debut in the 100 meters, while Jackson led a trio of Mountaineers in the 1,500 with a time of 4:26.38. Along with Jackson, freshman Linda Jebet placed eighth in the event in 5:11.20, ahead of redshirt junior Andrea Pettit, who finished ninth in 5:11.99.
In the 10,000 meters, redshirt freshman Bree Warren took second place with a time of 35:33.76. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills also competed, taking fourth in 36:56.87.
Additionally, freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6 inches). Sophomore Michaela Ashford placed sixth in the event, earning a mark of 4.81 meters (15 feet, 9 inches).
The Mountaineers are joined by Alderson Broaddus, Davis & Elkins, Gannon (men only), Marshall, Salem, Slippery Rock, West Liberty, West Virginia Wesleyan and the WVU Track Club in Morgantown this weekend.
Competition at the Mountaineer Showcase concludes on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. ET. Fans unable to attend the event can follow along with the Mountaineers with the meet's live results.
Due to constraints in the main parking area, fans will be directed to park in the overflow and supplemental lots around Mylan Park. A shuttle service to and from the track will be available.
