
WVU Executes Big Finish at Mountaineer Showcase

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team closed the State Farm Friends of Track and Field Mountaineer Showcase with six wins at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park on Saturday.
The Mountaineers competed in nine total events on the final day of the two-day competition at the new facility, which officially opened in October 2018. WVU combined to finished with 12 top-three performances on the day.
Redshirt senior Bria Welker began Saturday's action with a win in the 400 meters in a time of 57.67 before redshirt junior Olivia Hill won the 3,000 meters in 9:59.61. Later, freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie placed first in the 200 meters in 25.75, ahead of Welker, who finished second in 26.02.
In the field, redshirt senior Madelin Gardner continued her dominance in the pole vault. In an event that was moved to the WVU Shell Building due to wind conditions, Gardner registered a mark of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5.25 inches) in her victory. The win was Gardner's fourth straight in the event.
Sophomore Ellie Gardner finished second in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 3.82 meters (12 feet, 6.25 inches), while sophomore Mikayla Shute tallied an outdoor season-best jump of 3.66 meters (12 feet) for fourth. Freshmen Audrey Schlosser (3.51 meters – 11 feet, 6.25 inches), Molly DeBone (3.51 meters – 11 feet, 6.25 inches) and Julia Brundin (3.21 meters – 10 feet, 6.25 inches) placed fifth, sixth and ninth, respectively.
Redshirt senior Shamoya McNeil won the triple jump with a season-best mark of 12.93 meters (42 feet, 5 inches), while redshirt junior Faith Penny topped the field in the high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches). Freshman Sada Wright took second in the discus throw, earning a mark of 42.33 meters (138 feet, 10 inches), good for fourth-best in program history.
Additionally, freshman Margaret Rymer (1:06.67) and redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson (2:13.51) earned second-place finishes in the 400-meter hurdles and 800 meters, respectively. Along with Hill, redshirt freshman Marianne Abdalah took second in the 3,000 meters in 10:18.23, while redshirt junior Andrea Pettit finished fifth in the event in 11:24.06.
The Mountaineers opened the meet with a pair of wins on Friday night, as Welker won the 100 meters in 12.80, while Jackson finished first in the 1,500 meters in 4:26.38. In all, WVU finished with eight wins and 15 top-three finishes at the weekend competition.
The Mountaineers were joined by Alderson Broaddus, Davis & Elkins, Gannon (men only), Marshall, Salem, Slippery Rock, West Liberty, West Virginia Wesleyan and the WVU Track Club in Morgantown this weekend.
Next up, West Virginia closes the regular season at the Mountaineer Open, on Saturday, May 4, at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park. The meet will mark WVU's third and final home meet of the 2019 outdoor campaign.
