MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following its third annual Gold & Blue Regatta, the West Virginia University rowing team returns to the road, as it travels to Washington, D.C., on Friday, April 26, for a race against George Washington.
The Mountaineers are set to launch from the Thompson Boat Center tomorrow on the Potomac River and is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. ET. Fans traveling to D.C. on Friday can watch the races from the Georgetown Waterfront Park – River Steps.
"In addition to the challenge we'll get from the Colonials tomorrow, our crews, and specifically our coxswains, will have an additional challenge. The last 750 meters or so of the race course runs diagonally across the river current," said coach Jimmy King. "Depending on the strength of the current, our coxswains may have a notable challenge navigating an unfamiliar course. They, and the rowers, will have to be sharp tomorrow to get down the course efficiently."
West Virginia and George Washington are scheduled to compete in four different races – first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four and third varsity eight. Each race will begin 10 minutes after the preceding race has ended.
Following the conclusion of Friday's races, WVU and GW will travel off the race course, out of view for spectators, to compete in an afternoon scrimmage. The scrimmage is scheduled to occur from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
"The afternoon scrimmage provides our crews additional competitive work with our hosts, making the most of our trip to D.C.," said King. "Specifics for the scrimmage will be discussed and determined after the morning races."
Friday's showdown against GW is West Virginia's lone dual contest of the season. This season marks the second time that the Mountaineers have competed against the Colonials. The first meeting between WVU and GW came in 2011. West Virginia last competed on the Potomac River in 2017, when it squared off with Georgetown.
If a threat of inclement weather should arise for Friday's races, any changes to the race schedule will be posted to WVU rowing's social media.
A recap of Friday's action will be available on WVUsports.com.
