
Mountaineers Ready for Bison Outdoor Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team returns to the road to compete at the Bison Outdoor Classic, from April 13-14, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
The two-day meet at Bucknell's Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium is set to begin on Saturday at 1 p.m., with Sunday's action scheduled to commence at 9:30 a.m. Fans can follow along with the Mountaineers via live results, presented by BucknellBison.com.

The Mountaineers are among a large group of Division I schools attending the meet. WVU will be joined by Bucknell, Buffalo, Cornell, Duquesne, George Washington, Lehigh, Maryland, Penn, Penn State, Pitt, St. Joseph's, Syracuse, Temple and several others.
This weekend marks the fourth consecutive season West Virginia competes at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Last year, the Mountaineers earned six top-10 finishes at the meet, including a win in the 4x800-meter relay (Amy Cashin, Candace Jones, Antigone Archer, Abby Colbert). Archer also finished second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:17.48.
Last time out, WVU earned eight top-three finishes, including four wins, at a four-team meet at Virginia on April 6, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Competing against Maryland, Pitt and the host Cavaliers, redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson won a pair of events, while redshirt senior Madelin Gardner and redshirt freshman Katherine Dowie also registered victories.
Jackson won the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:45.37, before taking the 800 meters in 2:10.68. Gardner won the pole vault, jumping an outdoor season-best mark of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches), while Dowie finished first in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 6:54.92.
The Mountaineers also tallied four second-place finishes last week, courtesy of Jones (1,500 meters – 4:29.37), Archer (3,000 meters – 9:49.06), redshirt junior Faith Penny (high jump – 1.66 meters) and freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden (2,000-meter steeplechase – 6:59.74).
WVU enters the weekend with several athletes ranked in the top 50 of the national performance list. Gardner is tied for No. 9 nationally and No. 1 in the Big 12 in the pole vault with a top mark of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches), while redshirt senior Shamoya McNeil sits No. 35 in the triple jump with a mark of 12.74 meters (41 feet, 9.75 inches). Jackson is featured in a pair of events, ranking No. 36 in the 5,000 meters (16:20.50) and No. 49 in the 1,500 meters (4:23.15).
The Mountaineers are in action for the fifth consecutive weekend. In all, WVU will compete nine straight weeks, concluding at the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championship, which is set for May 10-12, in Norman, Oklahoma.
