MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore David Dixon of the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team opened the 2019 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships with a season-best performance in the 200 individual medley, on Thursday, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, in Austin, Texas.
Dixon earned a 49th-place finish with a time of 1:45.93 in the event's preliminaries. The Richmond, Virginia, native placed fourth in his heat.
A total of 54 swimmers competed in the 200 individual medley prelims. The top-16 times earned second swims at Thursday's finals session, with the top eight earning bids to the championship final.
"This was a very solid start to our meet," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "David had a really strong 200 IM and earned his best time, which is what you want in getting the week started."
Thursday marked the beginning of Dixon's second career appearance at the NCAA Championships. On Friday, the two-time Big 12 champion is set to swim in the 100 butterfly before competing in the 200 butterfly, an event he enters ranked No. 28 nationally, on Saturday.
Additionally, senior Jake Armstrong will compete in the 100 breaststroke on Friday. The Dover, Ohio, native enters the event ranked No. 25. Last year, Armstrong tied for 14th in the event at the 2018 NCAA Championships, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, earning honorable mention All-America honors.
