March 29, 2019 03:12 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Jake Armstrong and sophomore David Dixon of the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team each swam at the 2019 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, in Austin, Texas, on Friday.

Armstrong earned a 34th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke preliminary, touching the wall in 53.23. Dixon competed in the 100 butterfly prelim, placing 46th with a time of 47.03. The top-16 times in both events earned second swims at Friday's finals session, including the top eight, which earned bids to the championship finals.

"We had two strong 100's today," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "I thought Jake and David both had good swims. David's time was his fastest prelim and second-fastest all-time. Jake was just off his best, but it was great to see his last swim for WVU to be at NCAAs."

Friday marked Armstrong's second career appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Dover, Ohio, native finishes his Mountaineer career with a pair of Big 12 championships (2017, 2018), an honorable mention All-America honor in the 100 breast in 2018 and the school record in the 100 breast (52.11). He's also a member of two school-record-breaking relay teams (200, 400 medley relays) and is a three-time All-Big 12 First Team performer.

Dixon, who placed 49th with a season-best time of 1:45.93 in the 200 individual medley on Thursday, closes competition at the National Championships on Saturday. The Richmond, Virginia, native is set to compete in the 200 butterfly, an event he enters ranked No. 28 nationally.

Preliminaries will commence at 11 a.m. ET, with the finals slated to begin at 7 p.m.

ESPN will provide live coverage of Saturday's finals session on ESPN3. Saturday's preliminary session also will be available for live streaming at texassports.com.
