MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene shot three-under-par to lead the West Virginia University golf team through the first round of The Hootie Intercollegiate at Bull's Bay in Awendaw, South Carolina, on Sunday.
The Charlotte, North Carolina, native is tied for fifth place after the first 18 holes at Bull's Bay Golf Club. The No. 41 Mountaineers are in a three-way tie for eighth place with Big 12 foe No. 38 Iowa State and No. 4 Duke at one-under par. West Virginia carded a team score of 287 in the first round and sits eight strokes back from the lead. South Carolina and Missouri are tied for the team lead at nine under par with matching scores of 279.
"Today was a solid day for us," coach Sean Covich said. "Overall the guys hit the ball well. We might not have made as many putts as we would have liked but had a lot of looks out there. We're going to need a positive mindset that our birdies will eventually come because if we stay patient and get some more looks we can go low."
Starting on hole No. 10, Sharpstene carded a bogey, then a birdie before adding another birdie and an eagle in his last five holes. He finished the day with a 69 for three-under-par and in a tie for fifth place.
Classmate Logan Perkins finished even par with a 72. He balanced five birdies with three bogeys and a double-bogey to finish tied for 31st through the first round of play.
Junior Etienne Papineau had a birdie and a pair of bogeys as he finished one over. He sits tied for 40th with a scorecard that shows 73 after one round. Freshman Kurtis Grant also shot one-over-par with a 73, recording four birdies along with three bogeys and a double-bogey.
Senior Max Sear had three birdies but finish three over with a 75. He's currently tied for 61st place.
WVU is paired with Virginia and Duke in the second round. Tee times will start at 9 a.m. Monday off hole No. 10.
