MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After matching its first-round score in the second round, the West Virginia University golf team has moved into fifth place after 36 holes at The Hootie Intercollegiate, held at Bull's Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, South Carolina, on Monday.
The Mountaineers shot a 287 for one-under par as a team, sitting at 287-287=574 after two rounds of play. At two under, WVU has moved from a tie for eighth place and into fifth place. The College of Charleston leads the field at 14-under par (562), while Kent State is in second at 12 under (564). WVU is five strokes back from fourth-place Kansas (569) and is five ahead of Iowa State, who sits eighth (579).
"I thought today the course played a little more challenging with stronger winds, and more difficult hole locations," coach Sean Covich said. "The guys really battled and finished strong. Matthew Sharpstene, Etienne Papineau and Logan Perkins really closed out their rounds strong on their final nine holes. We will need a complete team effort tomorrow to finish where we want."
Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene continues to pace the Mountaineers and sits in the top five. Sharpstene's scorecard showed five birdies and an eagle, along with four bogeys, for a three-under-par 69. He is tied for fourth place at 69-69=138 for six-under par.
Sophomore Logan Perkins and junior Etienne Papineau also sit in the top 20 at one under with 36-hole scores of 143. After carding a 72 in the first round, Perkins used a birdie and an eagle to shoot a one-under-par 71 in the second round. Papineau, who registered a 73 on Sunday, carded four birdies and a pair of bogeys on his way to a two-under-par score 70.
Senior Max Sear struggled in the round, shooting five over with a 75. He's tied for 66th with a two-round score of 75-77=152 at eight over. Freshman Kurtis Grant is in 74th place, shooting 73-81=154 for 10-over par.
West Virginia is paired with Kansas and Missouri for the third and final round of play. Tee times will start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
