
WVU Completes Day Two of Zones with Four More Finalists

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams qualified for event finals at the 2019 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, in Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday afternoon.
Seniors Averly Hobbs and Madelyn Woods qualified for the women's 1-meter final, while freshmen Nick Cover and PJ Lenz earned trips to the men's 3-meter final on the second day of the three-day competition at Navy's Lejeune Hall.
Cover earned a 14th-place finish on 3-meter, registering a combined score of 596.40, while Lenz placed 16th with a 587.55 combined. Hobbs took 17th place on 1-meter with a combined score of 472.75, ahead of Woods, who placed 18th with a 438.35 combined.
The four finalists were among nine WVU divers to compete on Tuesday.
"It was another great day for WVU diving," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "All of the divers did a fantastic job. The senior girls made be so proud, and I can't thank them enough for their commitment to the team. I'm thankful for the memories we have shared through the years.
"The guys had some tough competition today, but they fought hard through prelims. PJ and Nick dove like veterans, and Jacob (Cardinal Tremblay) was so close to making another final but made some corrections to his diving. I'm looking forward to platform tomorrow."
Tuesday's events featured 64 women and 36 men competing in their respective events. The top-18 divers from the preliminary round reached the finals in both events, with the overall top six from women's 1-meter and top five from men's 3-meter earning qualification to the 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
After qualifying 14th with a score of 299.10 in prelims, Cover scored a 297.3 in the finals. Lenz reached the finals in 16th position after scoring 295.65 in prelims. He earned a score of 291.90 in the finals session.
On the women's side, Hobbs scored a 246.20 for 12th place in prelims before scoring 216.20 in the finals. Woods was 18th after prelims with a score of 246.20. She added a finals score of 192.15 to her total.
Additionally, redshirt freshman Jacob Cardinal Tremblay finished 19th overall on 3-meter with a score of 292.20. Senior Julia Calcut placed 33rd on 1-meter with a score of 233.95, while freshman Camille Burt took 36th with a 230.40. Freshman Emma Longley earned a 38th-place finish with a score of 225.95, while sophomore Callie Smith took 44th with a 220.30.
The trip to finals was the second of the week for Hobbs and Lenz. On Monday, Hobbs placed 10th overall on women's 3-meter with a combined score of 544.20, while Lenz took 13th place on men's 1-meter with a 583.45 combined.
Cardinal Tremblay (17th – 528.70) and Calcut (17th – 505.80) also reached Monday's finals on 1- and 3-meter, respectively.
The meet concludes on Wednesday with men's and women's platform diving. The action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET, and fans can follow along with the event's live results, presented by divemeets.com.
