MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seniors Averly Hobbs and Julia Calcut of the West Virginia University women's swimming and diving team and freshman PJ Lenz and redshirt freshman Jacob Cardinal Tremblay of the men's team qualified for event finals at the 2019 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, in Annapolis, Maryland, on Monday afternoon.
Hobbs finished 10th overall on women's 3-meter with a combined score of 544.20, while Calcut took 17th with a 505.80 combined. On men's 1-meter, Lenz placed 13th with a combined score of 583.45, while Cardinal Tremblay finished 17th (528.70).
The four Mountaineer finalists were among eight WVU divers who competed on the opening day of the three-day competition at Navy's Lejeune Hall.
"I'm incredibly proud of the divers; the energy was good, the diving was very good, and everyone showed up to compete," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "PJ and Jacob had a very strong 1-meter event and stayed consistent through prelims and finals. With PJ being a true freshman and Jacob just a redshirt freshman, both of them have bright futures ahead of them.
"The ladies were outstanding today. Averly was the closest to making NCAAs as we've had in years, and I'm so proud of her and Julia for making finals. The girls were competitive and were still having fun. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's events and hopeful for more positive results."
A total of 55 women and 35 men competed in their respective events on Monday. The top-six divers on men's 1-meter and top five on women's 3-meter earned qualification to the 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
