WVU Begins Big 12 Play at Iowa State
February 09, 2019 12:17 PM | Tennis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following two season-opening wins, the West Virginia University tennis team (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) travels to Des Moines, Iowa, on Sunday, Feb. 10, to open Big 12 play against Iowa State.
"They've always been a scrappy team. They've always been a team that will make you play. They will make you earn the wins against them, and we have to be prepared for that," said head coach Miha Lisac. "What we're looking to do is to take a lot of the things that we did in the first weekend and build upon that, confidence-wise, going into this weekend. It's still a very early match in the spring season, so we want to be learning and getting better from here on out. But it is a Big 12 match, so it's a very important part of our spring season."
Sunday's matches are scheduled to take place indoors at Life Time Fitness in Des Moines, starting at 10 a.m. ET.
With the series beginning in 2009, the Mountaineers are 1-6 all-time against the Cyclones. In 2018, West Virginia defeated Iowa State, 4-1, in Morgantown, to claim the first Big 12 conference win in program history. During the fall, three Mountaineers – freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia, sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau and senior Paula Goetz – competed against Iowa State at the Hokie Fall Invite in Blacksburg, Virginia, from Sept. 28-30.
Iowa State enters Sunday's contest with a 2-2 record, claiming wins over Augustana and South Dakota.
Live stats of Sunday's action against Iowa State will be available on StatBroadcast.
NOTES: WVU owns a 113-107 record against 2019 opponents, which includes a 1-6 record against Iowa State … with last week's victories over Duquesne and Pitt, WVU is 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2010 ... the victory against the Dukes also was the Mountaineers' first season-opening victory since 2010, when they defeated Youngstown State, 5-1 ... Bovolskaia leads the Mountaineers with four total wins this season ... Courteau, junior Sofia Duran and freshman Nicole Roc are tied for second with three total wins.
