West Virginia Earns Clean Sweep Over Niagara

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (5-1, 0-1 Big 12) cruised to a 7-0 victory over Niagara on Friday afternoon at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville, New York, to capture the team's first clean sweep of an opponent since 2015.
"It was a good team win today," said head coach Miha Lisac. "We will take this experience to prepare for tomorrow's match against Buffalo."
The Mountaineers last completed a clean sweep over an opponent in 2015, when they defeated UMBC, 7-0, in Morgantown.
Doubles Recap
Starting the No. 3 slot, freshman Nicole Roc and senior Abigail Rosiello got things rolling for the Mountaineers against the Purple Eagles, claiming a 6-2 win over Alli Hutchinson and Olga Donchu.
Finishing second in the No. 1 slot, senior Paula Goetz and sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau captured a 6-3 win over Andreea Peteu and Chhinda Som to clinch the doubles team point.
The final doubles match from the No. 2 slot was played out. Junior Sofia Duran and freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia defeated Shannon Wong and Megan Gamble, 6-3.

In the No. 1 slot, junior Christina Jordan and Chhinda Som went back-and-forth in the first set until it was tied, 6-6. Jordan won the tiebreaker, 7-5, to secure the first set, 7-6. The Detroit, Michigan, native went on to win the second set, 6-3, to claim the singles match.
Making her first appearance in the No. 2 slot, Bovolskaia defeated Shannon Wong, 6-0, 7-5.
Starting in the No. 3 slot, Roc captured an impressive win over Andreea Peteu, sweeping each set, 6-0, 6-0. With Roc's win, the Mountaineers grabbed their fourth team point to clinch the match. The final three matches were played out.
Courteau would start in the No. 4 slot for the first time this season and would defeat Olga Donchu in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Starting in the No. 5 slot, sophomore Giovanna Caputo grabbed another two-set victory for WVU by defeating Alli Hutchinson, 6-1, 6-1.
Making her first appearance in singles play this spring, senior Abigail Rosiello won the final match of the day from the No. 6 slot. The Morgantown, West Virginia, native defeated Erika Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-3, to help West Virginia complete the clean sweep over Niagara.

Looking Ahead
WVU competes tomorrow, Feb. 23, against Buffalo. Saturday's match is scheduled to take place indoors at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville, starting at 1 p.m. ET.
Tomorrow's matchup marks the seventh meeting between the Mountaineers and the Bulls. WVU holds a 4-2 record against Buffalo. In last season's regular-season meeting, West Virginia defeated the Bulls in Morgantown, 4-3.
Buffalo enters Saturday's matchup with a 6-1 record and is currently riding a three-match win streak after defeating Towson, Mercyhurst and Quinnipiac.
