MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the Big 12 Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Gardner, a two-time All-American, broke the indoor school record in the women's pole vault at the Penn State Tune-Up, on Feb. 16, in University Park, Pennsylvania. The Williamstown, West Virginia, native earned a mark of 4.38 meters (14 feet, 4.5 inches) in a first-place finish, topping her own previous indoor-best jump of 4.37 meters from the Akron Invitational in 2018.
The performance also was good for a Penn State meet and facility record.
Gardner, who also was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 and tied for No. 7 nationally in the pole vault this season. The weekly honor is the first of her career and WVU's first since Amy Cashin was recognized by the conference on May 1, 2018.
Through six meets this indoor season, Gardner has earned five victories in the pole vault. Additionally, she has recorded marks of 4.30 meters or better five times this winter.
West Virginia is set to travel to the 2019 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship, from Feb. 22-23, in Lubbock, Texas. The two-day championship meet is scheduled to begin on Friday at 4 p.m. ET, at Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center. Saturday's events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
