MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team closes the 2018-19 indoor regular season at the Penn State Tune-Up, on Saturday, Feb. 16, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Competition at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET. Fans can follow along with the action by viewing the meet's live results, presented by flotrack.org.
Additionally, redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson is set to compete at the JDL DMR Invitational on Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, while freshman Charlotte Wood competes in the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Cross Country Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
"We're entering a weekend that's big on multiple levels for our program," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "The majority of our team will travel back to Penn State to get one last opportunity to produce a good performance before the conference meet. It's our belief that the bulk of the group has progressed throughout the indoor season in a way where they should feel confident heading into next week.
"As for Hayley, she has shown her ability all winter long, which is why we're hoping for another big result that could lead to even bigger things for her. Charlotte also has been given a tremendous chance to race in a unique setting and represent her home country on an international level. She joins former Mountaineer great Jessica O'Connell, who will be representing Team Canada after having just broken Megan (Metcalfe) Wright's national 3,000 meters record at last week's Millrose Games. We're so excited to see what's in store for them."
Saturday marks the Mountaineers' second trip to Penn State this indoor season. WVU also competed in the Penn State National Open, from Jan. 25-26. In all, West Virginia is competing at the Penn State Tune-Up for the fourth consecutive year, as well as visiting University Park for an indoor meet for the ninth time since the 2014-15 campaign.
At last year's Penn State Tune-Up, then-freshman McKenna Smith won the women's 200 meters (24.73) and 400 meters (55.88) to lead WVU to a total of seven top-five finishes.
Earlier this season, WVU won three events at the PSU National Open, including a meet-record performance by redshirt senior Madelin Gardner. The Williamstown, West Virginia, native registered a first-place jump of 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11.25 inches) in the women's pole vault, while redshirt sophomore Antigone Archer won the women's 3,000 meters in 9:57.07. Jackson won the women's 1,000 meters in 2:48.70.
Last time out, WVU collected three victories at the SPIRE Division I Classic, from Feb. 8-9, in Geneva, Ohio. Gardner won the women's pole vault with a mark of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches), while the Mountaineers' distance medley relay team, comprised of Jackson, redshirt senior Bria Welker, freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden and redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills, won with a time of 11:52.96.
Jackson also earned a victory in the women's 3,000 meters (elite) at SPIRE, topping a field of 21 runners with a personal-best time of 9:28.27.
Jackson is set to compete in the women's mile at the JDL DMR Invitational. Last year, Amy Cashin won the event in 4:39.63, en route to qualification to the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Wood will represent Team Canada at the NACAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The Bracebridge, Ontario, native also qualified for the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Cross Country Championships, which will be held in March in Aarhus, Denmark.
In this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) #EventSquad Rankings, WVU ranks No. 21 nationally in the women's pole vault, led by Gardner, who sits No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference and tied for No. 12 nationally in the event. The Mountaineers also rank in the top 10 in the conference in five events.
The Penn State Tune-Up marks the Mountaineers' sixth consecutive weekend competition.
