MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Charlotte Wood and freshman Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University cross country team competed at the Canadian National Cross Country Championships in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, on Saturday, Nov. 30.
McCabe qualified for the Canadian National U20 team with a fifth-place finish in the junior women's competition, while Wood finished in 15th place in the senior women's race.
"After a long collegiate season, I was very impressed with Charlotte's and Ceili's races," Mountaineer coach Sean Cleary said. "Qualifying for the Canada National Team has been a goal for Ceili since she arrived on campus in August. We are extremely proud of her for qualifying. Charlotte stuck her nose in there with some of her country's finest distance runners.
"We had an original goal of top 20 in this race, so we are more than pleased with these performances. Charlotte and Ceili were huge contributors to this program this past fall, and they should only continue to progress."
McCabe notched a 6k time of 21:03 in the junior race to take fifth place. With the finish, the Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native qualifies to represent Team Canada at the Pan American Cup on Feb. 29, 2020, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
While Wood is of age to compete in the junior women's race, she chose to run with the senior women, finishing 15th overall with a 10k time of 36:05.229. The Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada, native represented Team Canada at the 2019 IAAF/Mikkeller World Cross Country Championships this past March.
Wood recently completed her sophomore season with the Mountaineers, as she competed in four meets for WVU in 2019. She competed at the Big 12 Championship on Nov. 2, in Waco, Texas, and crossed the line in 17th place to help the Mountaineers to a third-place finish at the conference meet.
McCabe finished her rookie campaign this fall, as she collected All-Big 12 and All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors, in her first collegiate season. She was the top freshman finisher at the Big 12 Championship and was the second rookie to cross the line at the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 15, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. At season's end, McCabe was named the 2019 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
