MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
West Virginia University Director of Athletics
Shane Lyons released the 2019-20 indoor track and field schedule on Wednesday.
The season-opening
Marty Pushkin Open, one of two home meets for the Mountaineers this winter, is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, at the WVU Shell Building, and highlights WVU's indoor campaign. The schedule consists of eight regular-season meets leading up to the Big 12 and NCAA Indoor Championships.
"The most exciting part of this year's schedule is that we have two opportunities for our team to compete at home," WVU coach
Sean Cleary said. "The remainder of our meet selection follows a pattern that we have always followed. We want our team to compete in the types of meets that allow them to both gain confidence and be pushed to be their best. Every athlete on the team has the opportunity to perform at their highest level based on the teams we have chosen to compete against."
WVU will ring in the New Year with its second and final home meet of the indoor campaign on Friday, Jan. 10, before taking the road for the first time for the YSU College Invitational, in Youngstown, Ohio, on Friday, Jan. 17.
From there, the team will compete in its first two-day meet of the season at the PSU National Open, from Jan. 31-Feb. 1, in University Park, Pennsylvania. It will mark the Mountaineers' first of two visits to Penn State, as the team is set to return to the home of the Nittany Lions on Friday, Feb. 21, for the Penn State Tune-Up, serving as WVU's regular-season finale.
Following the trip to University Park, the Mountaineers will visit Akron, Ohio, for the Akron Invitational from Feb. 6-8. WVU will then split for two different meets from Jan. 14-15. A portion of the team will compete in the Valentine's Invitational, hosted by Boston University, in Boston, Massachusetts, while the others will visit Huntington, West Virginia, for Marshall University's Chipotle Invitational.
Iowa State will serve as the host of the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Championship from Feb. 28-29, in Ames, Iowa. WVU finished ninth at the conference meet last season. The 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships will be held from March 13-14, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Last season,
Madelin Gardner represented WVU at the national meet in Birmingham, Alabama. She collected All-America Second Team honors for her ninth-place finish in the women's pole vault. Gardner also went on to earn All-America honors during the 2018-19 outdoor season.
The Mountaineers welcome seven newcomers to the squad this season, while 30 members of the team, including two seniors, return for the 2019-20 campaign.
