MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
West Virginia University gymnastics coach
Jason Butts announced today that Chloe Asper, Agatha Handono and Kiana Lewis have signed National Letters of Intent to compete at WVU next fall.
Asper joins the Mountaineers from Hanover, Pennsylvania, where she is a three-year level 10 gymnast for Lisa Pratt and Minyoung Kwon at Hanover Gymnastics.
A two-time Junior Olympics National Championships qualifier, Asper most recently finished as high as fourth on balance beam and sixth in the all-around at the 2019 Region 7 Championships. That same season, she earned a third-place showing on beam, a fourth-place finish in the all-around and a fifth-place showing on floor at the Pennsylvania State Championships.
In 2018, Asper placed fourth on beam at the Region 7 Championships. Leading into regionals, she won beam at the 2018 Pennsylvania State Championships, as well as fifth on floor and the all-around events. Asper also earned a runner-up finish on beam at the 2017 Pennsylvania State Championships.
The daughter of Deborah Asper, she currently attends Hanover Senior High and intends to major in mechanical and aerospace engineering at WVU.
"I wanted to be apart of the WVU gymnastics family since I was 10 years old," Asper said. "The coaches are amazing, and the gym environment is incredibly positive. The school also meets all my needs and wants. It has my major, and it's a beautiful campus. It's not too far from my hometown, and the state has so much pride and passion for their school, as well as its athletic programs. West Virginia is the full package."
"Chloe is an extremely grounded athlete," Mountaineer associate head coach
Travis Doak said. "She has been looking forward to representing WVU since her commitment, and we believe she will thrive in the college setting. She is very coachable and will make an immediate impact. She is such a positive person, and we are excited about her decision to join WVU."
Handono comes to Morgantown from Gaithersburg, Maryland, where she is a three-year level 10 gymnast for Cynthia Smaha and Teri Boyden at Hill's Gymnastics, which is the same club that senior
Erica Fontaine and graduate
Robyn Bernard competed for.
Handono most recently qualified for the 2019 Junior Olympic National Championships, placing fifth on beam. Prior to the meet, Handono earned a trio of top-six showings at the 2019 Region 7 Championships, including a runner-up finish on bars, a fourth-place finish in the all-around and a sixth-place finish on beam. She also captured the beam title at the 2019 Maryland State Championships and finished second on bars and third in the all-around.
In 2018, Handono placed fifth on beam and ninth in the all-around at the Region 7 Championships. That same season, she earned a runner-up finish on beam, a third-place showing on bars and a fifth-place finish in the all-around at the Maryland State Championships.
The daughter of Antonius Handono and Erika Phan, she currently attends Colonel Zadok Magruder High and intends to major in exercise physiology at WVU.
"I chose WVU because the campus is so unique, and it has a great medical program," Handono said. "The gymnastics program also was exactly what I was looking for, and the coaches are so amazing and supportive."
"Agatha is a great all-around competitor that provides special strength on bars and beam, the two events we are focusing on improving the most in the next couple years," Doak said. "Her instant connection with our team and staff made her a natural fit for the Mountaineer family. She comes from a great club gym that will allow her to walk in the door ready to compete."
Lewis, a native of Hampton, Virginia, is a three-year level 10 gymnast for Rex and Tami Harrison and Beka Conrad at World Class Gymnastics. A two-time Junior Olympics National Championships qualifier, Lewis has captured a state title on every event except for beam as a level 10 gymnast.
Lewis earned a pair of top-10 finishes at the 2019 Region 7 Championships, placing seventh on vault and eighth on beam. She led into the meet with a stellar showing at the Virginia State Championships, winning titles on floor and bars and finishing second on vault and the all-around.
Lewis qualified for her second Junior Olympics National Championships in 2018, finishing as high as fourth on floor and 16th in the all-around. Five top-six showings highlighted Lewis' performance at the 2018 Region 7 Championships, including victories on vault and floor, as well as a runner-up finish in the all-around. She also finished third on beam and sixth on bars. That same year, Lewis won the vault and floor titles at the Virginia State Championships.
In 2017, Lewis competed at the Junior Olympics National Championships for the first time in her career, placing as high as fourth on vault. She also earned a third- and fourth-place showing on vault at the 2017 Region 7 Championships and the 2017 Virginia State Championships, respectively. Additionally, Lewis placed second on beam and floor at the state championships.
The daughter of Charles and Valencia Lewis, she currently attends Bethel High and intends to major in exercise physiology at WVU.
"I chose WVU because I loved the culture of the team," Lewis said. "They made me feel like family, and I was very comfortable. I couldn't beat that feeling."
"Kiana is a dynamic athlete," Doak said. "Her most exciting quality is her ability to continue to learn and develop skills. Kiana doesn't have a weak event and has the rare combination of style, flexibility and power. In addition to her athletic ability, Kiana has a great personality and sense of humor."
"All-in-all, we are so thrilled about this class because they complement one another," Butts said. "We set out on a goal to find athletes who have the ability to walk in the door and make an immediate impact. We believe this class will do just that and more."
