MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team collected four wins on Friday afternoon, as the team began play at the Kentucky Invite, at the Top Seed Tennis Club, in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
"We had a solid start to the tournament," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "We will be looking for more progress in tomorrow's matches. I think the matches will be more challenging throughout the weekend, and it will be good for us to face tough competition."
Doubles Recap
West Virginia opened the Kentucky Invite in doubles play, as junior Anne-Sophie Courteau and senior Sofia Duran squared off against Priyana Kalita and Janelle Ghanem from Miami (Ohio). The Mountaineer duo posted the first victory of the day for WVU, after claiming an 8-3 win over Kalita and Ghanem.
Singles Recap
Courteau started singles play off strong for West Virginia, as the junior went toe-to-toe with DePaul's Yuliya Kizelbasheva. Courteau claimed the first set, 6-4, before a setback in the second set, 4-6, forced a tiebreaker. In the third frame, Courteau bested Kizelbasheva, 6-3, to decide the match.
Junior Giovanna Caputo also found herself in a three-set tiebreaker, as she squared off against Kalita. After securing the first set, 6-2, the junior stumbled in the second set, 4-6, as the Mountaineers found themselves in another tiebreaker. In the deciding frame, Caputo fell to Kalita, 2-6.
Sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Duran helped the Mountaineers close out Friday's tournament opener in strong fashion, as each notched a two-set victory in the final two singles contests. Bovolskaia defeated Penn State's Sydney Weinberg, 6-0, 6-4, while Duran bested Janelle Ghanem, 6-1, 6-1.
