MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by a sweep in doubles play, the West Virginia University tennis team collected five wins on Saturday afternoon, as the Mountaineers concluded day two of the Kentucky Invite, at the Top Seed Tennis Club, in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
"We had another solid day of competition and are looking to build upon the matches going into tomorrow," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "The more things that we do right in fall competition, the better prepared we will be for spring competition."
Doubles Recap
West Virginia remained undefeated in doubles play at the Kentucky Invite, as two Mountaineer duos squared off against Miami (Ohio) and DePaul.
Sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia and junior Giovanna Caputo paired to defeat Priyana Kalita and Janelle Ghanem from Miami (Ohio), 8-3, before junior Anne-Sophie Courteau and senior Sofia Duran secured the doubles sweep by defeating DePaul's Madelyn Yergler and Layo Adelakun, 8-2.
Singles Recap
In the opening match of singles, Courteau stumbled as she fell to host Kentucky's Diana Tkachenko in two sets, 6-7, 1-6. Tkachenko claimed the tiebreaking point to win the first set.
However, for the second consecutive day, the Mountaineers concluded singles play in strong fashion.
Caputo and Bovolskaia each posted two-set victories and neither allowed their opponent to win a single game in straight sets. Caputo got things started for WVU, as she defeated Virginia Tech's Jade Woo, 6-0, 6-0. Finishing shortly after was Bovolskaia, as she bested Janelle Ghanem from Miami (Ohio), 6-0, 6-0.
Duran closed out the second round of singles, as she defeated Kentucky's Maialen Morante in two sets, 6-2, 6-4.
