Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The West Virginia University men's soccer team fell to Bowling Green, 3-0, on Saturday night at Cochrane Soccer Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio.
On a wet and chilly evening, a steady rain made its presence felt throughout the contest. The Falcons began the scoring with a goal in the 36th minute, before the hosts added two more in the second half in the conference victory.
West Virginia finished with eight shots in the loss, including five in the second half. With the result, the Mountaineers fell to 6-7-1 on the season and 0-3 in Mid-American Conference play.
"The weather, obviously, took a little bit out of the game, but we'd play very well and then again make the individual errors that cost us goals," WVU coach
Marlon LeBlanc said. "Credit Bowling Green for capitalizing on those errors. We just constantly make mistakes that cost us games, including conceding another own goal. That's where we're at right now – we'll play really well and then have errors that break everything down. I'm the one who picks the team, so I probably have to do a better job with that, so we aren't in the situation where we're giving goals away like we did tonight."
Freshman forward
Brian Bond unleashed the Mountaineers' first shot in the 13th minute on an attempt that went high and wide. From there, freshman midfielder
Luke McCormick used a nice run into the box to set up a shot in the 25th minute, which was blocked away by the Bowling Green keeper.
After BGSU (9-5-1, 1-2 MAC) scored the match's first goal in the 36th, sophomore forward
Tony Pineda struck a low ball to the far post. Again, the BGSU keeper was there to make the finger-tip save.
WVU trailed, 1-0, at halftime.
The Falcons doubled its lead in the 60th minute on an own goal. Then, BGSU made the lead three in the 74th minute on a shot from the top of the box.
On the other end of the pitch, freshman forward
Rodrigo Robles Grajera earned a shot on goal in the 66th minute, before senior midfielder
Andres Muriel Albino looked for a breakthrough by tallying a pair of shots later on.
In all, Bowling Green outshot the Mountaineers, 12-8, including 6-3 in shots on goal. BGSU also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Steven Tekesky made four saves for West Virginia in the setback, including three after halftime.
Next up, WVU returns to the road for MAC fixture at SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Nov. 2. Kickoff at Korte Stadium is set for 8 p.m. ET.
