Nation’s Best Teams Meet Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two of the NCAA's top rifle teams meet in a key matchup, as No. 1-ranked West Virginia welcomes No. 2 TCU to Morgantown for a shoulder-to-shoulder match on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 9 a.m. ET, at the WVU Rifle Range inside the WVU Natatorium.
The Horned Frogs (2-0) are the reigning National Champions, though the Mountaineers (1-0, 1-0 GARC) own a nation-best 19 NCAA Championships. The showdown will feature eight of the top 13 individuals in the NCAA, including four members from WVU.
Saturday's marquee matchup is free and open to the public.
"We're excited to open our home season, especially since we're competing against the reigning national champions," 14-year coach Jon Hammond said. "It's nice to have this challenge early in the season, and I think it will be a great test for us. TCU is going to be tough every year, but we're up for the task."
WVU is 6-2 all-time against TCU. Last season, the Mountaineers earned a 4703-4678 win at TCU on Nov. 10, 2018. The squads met again at the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships held at the WVU Coliseum in March. TCU captured the team title with a 4699 mark, while WVU finished second with a 4692 total. The Horned Frogs also took home the smallbore team title, and then-sophomore Elizabeth Marsh shot her way to the individual smallbore title. Additionally, then-freshman Kristen Hemphill claimed the individual title in air rifle.
Of note, TCU's last regular season loss (Nov. 10, 2018) was at the hands of WVU. The Horned Frogs most recently captured a 4703-4663 win at Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 13.
The Mountaineers also are coming off a bye week after opening the 2019-20 season with a 4719-4642 victory at No. 11 Nebraska on Oct. 12. WVU swept UN in both disciplines, winning smallbore, 2343-2291, and air rifle, 2376-2351. Senior Milica Babic won the individual competitions, shooting 590 in smallbore and 598 in air rifle for a career-high aggregate total of 1188, which is the top mark in the NCAA thus far. Senior Morgan Phillips sports a 1179 aggregate score, good for the fourth-best mark nationally.
The Horned Frogs are led by freshman Stephanie Grundsoee, who enters the match with the third-best aggregate average in the country with a mark of 1179.3 Hemphill rounds out the top five with an aggregate average of 1178.3.
