MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team is back on the road this weekend, as the team travels to Blacksburg, Virginia, for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Atlantic Regional from Oct. 25-29.
This year's ITA Women's Atlantic Regional is hosted by Virginia Tech, with all matches taking place at VT's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center and the Washington Street Recreational Courts. Live stats will be provided by the ITA
via CourtHive for fans wishing to follow tournament action. Each day is tentatively scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET.
"It'll be good to follow up the Martha Thorn with the regional," WVU coach
Miha Lisac said. "I thought we got some good, competitive matches in, and I think the players that are competing this weekend are ready and prepared to have a good tournament."
In Friday's tournament opener, WVU is scheduled to begin in doubles. Senior
Sofia Duran and sophomore
Nicole Roc are set to face Radford's Katey Fruehauf and Malin Falk, while junior
Anne-Sophie Courteau and freshman
Kat Lyman are scheduled for a showdown with Penn State's Olivia Ryan and Frederikke Svarre.
In the singles qualification bracket, Roc is set to square off against Duquesne's Miranda Bishard, while Lyman is scheduled to face Liberty's Esther Lovato. The eight winners of the singles qualification bracket will move on to the singles elimination bracket, beginning on Saturday.
In Saturday's main draw of 64 singles, Duran is set for a first-round matchup with No. 15-seed William & Mary's Natalia Perry, Courteau is set to square off with Virginia Tech's Nika Kozar, while sophomore
Anastasiia Bovolskaia rounds out Saturday's main draw with a contest against VCU's Kanako Yano.
Bovolskaia was the story of last year's ITA Atlantic Regional in Lynchburg, Virginia. The native of Irkutsk, Russia, propelled WVU to the main draw round of 32, collecting three singles wins along the way. Bovolskaia fell in the second round to Penn State's Samantha Smith in straight sets, 4-6, 4-6, to finish her run at last year's regional.
