WVU, UCF to Host The Tavistock

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 19, 2019) – The West Virginia University golf team will join UCF in hosting The Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, held from Sunday through Tuesday, at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Florida.
The 2019 event marks the third season the Mountaineers and the Knights have hosted the tournament on the par-72, 7,544-yard course. The two are joined by Cal, No. 36 Illinois, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 21 Vanderbilt, No. 2 Texas Tech, Florida, Augusta, No. 22 Texas, No. 31 South Carolina, No. 38 LSU, No. 42 Minnesota, No. 24 Auburn and UNLV in this year's field.
All 15 programs rank inside the Golfstat top-100 rankings. West Virginia comes in at No. 26 in the first rankings of the season, released Thursday, and sits at No. 23 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
"The Tavistock Collegiate Invitational is always a major event for college golf and we are honored to continue our partnership with this prestigious tournament," coach Sean Covich said. "This golf course is certainly a challenge and the greens are some of the best we will see all year. Our guys will have a good game plan; we just need to execute and stay patient this week."
Junior Matthew Sharpstene, senior Etienne Papineau, junior Mark Goetz, freshman Nico Lang and junior Logan Perkins will represent West Virginia at the tournament. Sharpstene currently leads the team with a 70.78 stroke average, Followed by Papineau at 71.33 and Perkins at 71.44. All five members of the lineup boast a stroke average of 72 or better.
Sharpstene and Goetz tied for the runner-up spot at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Oct. 7-8, while Papineau led the Mountaineers with a 3-1-1 record at The Big 12 Match Play Tournament Oct. 11-13.
Golfers will hit the links starting in tee times starting at 8 a.m. and play one round each day. Perkins is first off the tee on Sunday, followed by Lang (8:10 a.m.), Goetz (8:20 a.m.), Papineau (8:30 a.m.) and Sharpstene (8:40 a.m.). The Mountaineers are paired with UCF and Texas for the first round.
Additionally, a trio of Mountaineers will compete at the Xavier, Musketeer Classic at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio. Senior Philipp Matlari, freshman Christian Boyd and sophomore Kurtis Grant will compete as individuals at the event.
