MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team finished in 21st place at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday.
Junior Hayley Jackson was the first Mountaineer to cross the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course finish line with a 6k time of 21:03.3 in 69th place. Jackson was followed by sophomore Charlotte Wood, who took 96th in 21:16.2.
Redshirt senior Olivia Hill completed the Badgers' home course in 21:27.7, good for 124th place. Junior Bree Warren and redshirt senior Candace Archer finished side by side in 140th (21:34) and 141st (21:34.1), respectively.
"I am very proud of the team for their second half commitment to this race," Mountaineer coach Sean Cleary said. "Collectively, we passed approximately 500 runners over the second half of today's nearly 300-runner race. In hind sight, we came out a little slow, but we fought very hard to the finish. While we did hope to be a little better today, we were satisfied that this was a step in the right direction. We will go home, recover and make one more push in training before the Big 12 meet."
Friday's meet at Wisconsin featured two women's races, and each team was permitted to run seven girls in the "A" race, with the remainder in the "B" race. Freshman Ceili McCabe and redshirt junior Antigone Archer also competed in the "A" race. McCabe notched 153rd in 21:40.5, while Archer crossed the line in 22:03 to grab 197th place.
The "B" race featured three Mountaineers, including redshirt sophomore Marianne Abdalah and redshirt freshmen Katherine Dowie and Samantha Hatcher. Dowie led the way in 35th (22:00.6), followed by Abdalah in 38th (22:04.1). Hatcher rounded out the WVU finishers in 100th place in 23:28.7).
In the team's first time racing in the Nuttycombe Invite, the Mountaineers captured 21st place with 570 points. Arkansas took first place with 62 points, followed by Stanford in second with 98. NC State (203), Wisconsin (217) and Michigan State (219) rounded out the top five.
Friday's field featured 243 runners in the "A" race and 115 in the "B" race. A total of 36 schools competed in the 11th running of the annual event. This was the third time the Mountaineers have competed at the Zimmer Championship Course, having previously raced in the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in 2014 and 2015.
Additionally, two Mountaineer runners also competed on Friday at the Penn State National Open in University Park, Pennsylvania. Redshirt freshmen Malina Mitchell and Peyton Kukura represented WVU on Penn State's Blue-White Course. Mitchell finished in 121st in a 6k time of 23:13.1, while Kukura crossed the line 135th (23:27.5). The field at PSU featured 159 runners from 17 different schools.
