MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the seventh consecutive season, the West Virginia University cross country team travels to the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, on Friday, Sept. 7, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
The women's 6k race at Penn State's Blue-White Golf Course is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
"While all races have importance, we venture over to Penn State early in the season to become more familiar with the course for later meets," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "We will run a smaller group this weekend but should return from the race better prepared for the championship season."
West Virginia is one of 10 schools participating in the Spiked Shoe Invitational. The Mountaineers will be joined by three schools that are ranked in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches' Poll in No. 12 Penn State, No. 22 Syracuse and No. 25 Georgetown, as well as other participating schools in American, Cornell, Grove City, Navy, Pitt and Saint Joseph's.
WVU is no stranger to the venue of Friday's meet, as the team has competed in University Park nine times since 2014. It also marks the first of three trips to Penn State for the Mountaineers this season. The squad returns for the Penn State National Open on Oct. 12, and again on Nov. 9, for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
The Mountaineers are coming off a victory at the season-opening Charlotte Opener on Aug. 31, in Concord, North Carolina. Freshman Charlotte Wood crossed the finish line in 18:17.2 (5k) to win her collegiate debut, topping a field of 61 runners. With the performance, the Bracebridge, Ontario, native earned Big 12 Runner of the Week honors on Tuesday.
Wood led a 1-2-3 finish for WVU, which also included redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills (18:19.8) and redshirt junior Olivia Hill (18:27.6). In all, five Mountaineers finished in the top 10.
The team win was WVU's third consecutive season-opening victory and fourth in the last five years.
Last year at the Spiked Shoe Invitational, the Mountaineers earned a sixth-place finish and were led by Amy Cashin, who placed 12th individually. Cashin earned a time of 21:49 (6k) to pace the Mountaineers.
WVU also placed eighth at the Penn State National Open, held at the Blue-White Course, in 2017.
