MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Charlotte Wood of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the Big 12 Runner of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The Bracebridge, Ontario, native won her collegiate debut at the Charlotte Opener last Friday in Concord, North Carolina, leading the Mountaineers to a victory at the season-opening meet.
Wood ran the Frank Liske Park (5k) course in 18:17.2. She topped a field of 61 runners and was the first of five Mountaineers to finish in the top 10 of the race.
"It was a very strong opening race for Charlotte," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "It's rare to win a cross country meet at the college level, so we are excited to see what her future brings her."
Wood is the fourth Mountaineer in program history to earn the conference's weekly honor. Amy Cashin was named Big 12 Runner of the Week last season, while Jillian Forsey (2016) and Sarah Martinelli (2013) also received the honor.
With the victory, WVU won its season-opening meet for the third consecutive season and fourth time in five years.
WVU is back in action on Friday, Sept. 7, at the Spiked Shoe Invitational in University Park, Pennsylvania. The women's 6k race is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET at Penn State's Blue-White Golf Course.
