
Mountaineers Cap Day One at Hokie Fall Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team finished day one at the Hokie Fall Invite with a 7-3 match record between singles and doubles play.
"Overall, it was good to start a tournament and see our players in match play," said head coach Miha Lisac. "I thought we had some good things that we can build upon from doubles as well as from singles, and we have a few things to look forward to in tomorrow's matches that we want to do better."
DOUBLES RECAP
Day one of the tournament got started when three Mountaineer duos competed against Radford and Delaware.
Senior Paula Goetz and freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia began the morning for WVU, securing an 8-6 win over Radford's Drousile Dzeubou and Malin Falk, advancing them to round two of the Brotherhood Doubles Flight. Goetz and Bovolskaia would drop their second-round match, 8-4, to VCU's Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado and Kanako Yano.
Junior Christina Jordan and sophomore Giovanna Caputo suffered a first round loss, 8-7 (7), in a tiebreaker to Delaware's Emily Gotkiewicz and Sarah Whited. Jordan and Caputo received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket.
Senior Abigail Rosiello and sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau rounded out doubles play with an 8-6 victory over Delaware's Draga Sabotic and Viva Laas.
SINGLES RECAP
Goetz, Rosiello and senior Kirsten White kicked off singles play for the Mountaineers. Goetz would face off against Appalachian State's Jeannez Daniel, securing a two-set victory (6-2, 6-2). Rosiello claimed another victory for WVU in impressive fashion, claiming a two-set victory (6-0, 6-0) over host Virginia Tech's Caletha Vick. White went on to secure a three-set victory (4-6, 7-5, 6-1) over Virginia Tech's Jade Woo.
Bovolskaia continued singles pay in the middle of the day when she went toe-to-toe with Radford's Anastasia Belyaeva, winning in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 6-4). In the same flight, Caputo lost in two sets (7-5, 6-3) to Liberty's Ashley Bongart.
Friday's singles action was capped off with another victory from Courteau, besting Radford's Katey Fruehauf in two sets (7-6 (4), 6-3). Courteau's win was the fifth singles win of the day for the Mountaineers.
SATURDAY TOURNAMENT PREVIEW
For Saturday's doubles action, Goetz and Bovolskaia will take on Iowa State's Margarita Timakova and Ekaterina Grib at 9 a.m.
Jordan and Caputo will go head-to-head with Marshall's Victoria Walter and Liz Stefancic at 9 a.m.
Finally, Rosiello and Courteau will advance to the quarterfinals of the Sacrifice Doubles Flight for a matchup with Penn State's Gracey Hirsch and Sydney Weinberg (9 a.m.).
Saturday's singles action will begin at 10 a.m. with Goetz, Rosiello and White as they move on to round two in their respective flights. Goetz will take on Penn State's Chelsea Sawyer, Rosiello will match up against Georgia Southern's Elizabeth Goines and White will face off against James Madison's Amanda Nord.
Also advancing in their respective brackets, Bovolskaia will move on to a second-round showdown with Iowa State's Ekaterina Grib (11 a.m.), while Courteau will square off with Appalachian State's Kate Earnhardt (11:30 a.m.).
Caputo will advance to the consolation bracket in the Honor Singles Flight, where she will compete against Marshall's Madison Ballow.
