WVU Completes Day Two in Blacksburg

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team completed day two in Blacksburg as they prepare for tomorrow's Hokie Fall Invite tournament finale.
"It was good to have the second say of singles and doubles matches on today," said head coach Miha Lisac. "We are learning and getting better through competing against different opponents. Tomorrow will be another good day for match play."
DOUBLES RECAP
Day two of the tournament saw three Mountaineer duos square off against three familiar foes – Iowa State, Marshall and Penn State.
Senior Paula Goetz and freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia started Saturday's doubles action when they took on Iowa State's Margarita Timakova and Ekaterina Grib. Goetz and Bovolskaia would lose to the duo from Iowa State, 8-2.
After receiving a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket, Junior Christina Jordan and sophomore Giovanna Caputo suffered another loss, 8-7 (5), in a tiebreaker to Marshall's Victoria Walter and Liz Stefancic.
Senior Abigail Rosiello and sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau rounded out Saturday's doubles action with an 8-5 victory over Penn State's Gracey Hirsch and Sydney Weinberg, advancing them to the finals in the Sacrifice Doubles Flight.
SINGLES RECAP
Saturday's singles action started with Goetz's matchup with Penn State's Chelsea Sawyer. Goetz would drop the match in two sets (6-4, 6-1) and advance in the Ut Prosim Singles consolation flight. Goetz was defeated in her final match of the day by Marshall's Anna Smith.
Rosiello suffered her first setback of the tournament in a two-set loss (6-2, 6-1) to Georgia Southern's Elizabeth Goines. Moving on to the Service Singles consolation flight, Rosiello would advance after Iowa State's Savanah Williams withdrew from their singles match.
Also, in the Service Singles flight, White fell in two sets (6-2, 6-3) to James Madison's Amanda Nord. After advancing to the consolation bracket, White would go on to defeat Delaware's Annie Jaskulski (6-3, 2-0 ret.).
Bovolskaia dropped two matches on the day, one to Iowa State's Ekaterina Grib (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) and another to James Madison's Daria Afanasyeva (6-3, 6-4).
Courteau lost her second-round match in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) to Appalachian State's Kate Earnhardt, but rebounded in the consolation bracket, defeating Delaware's Viva Laas in two sets (6-1, 6-4).
Completing day two's singles action, Caputo defeated Marshall's Madison Ballow in the Honor Singles consolation bracket, but dropped her semi-finals match to Virginia Tech's Shene Disbergen in two sets (7-5, 6-3).
SUNDAY TOURNAMENT PREVIEW
Sunday's tournament finale in doubles will begin when Goetz and Bovolskaia go toe-to-toe with James Madison's Abby Amos and Daniela Voloh at 9 a.m.
Jordan and Caputo will play their final match of the weekend when they take on Delaware's Tayo Adetunji and Annie Jaskulski at 9 a.m.
Finally, Rosiello and Courteau will compete in the final round of the Sacrifice Doubles Flight in a matchup with James Madison's Diane Flament and Amanda Nord (9 a.m.).
Singles action will begin with Bovolskaia as she takes on VCU's Kanako Yano. Caputo will square off against Georgia Southern's Lindsay Truscott, and Courteau will advance to a match with Iowa State's Reggie Espindola. Goetz's scheduled match will see her take on Appalachian State's Maria Jose Zacarias.
