MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fresh off its second team win of the season, the West Virginia University cross country team travels to the 45th annual Paul Short Run on Saturday, Sept. 29, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The women's 6k gold race is set to begin at 11:45 a.m. ET, at Lehigh's Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. Results for the meet, as well as additional information, can be found at LehighSports.com/PaulShort.
"For the most part, we will be racing those that were not on the line last week at Lock Haven," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "The team made a strong movement toward getting past the sickness that rolled the team over the last few weeks. Lehigh is always an incredible place to race; we want to go out there, compete in a huge field, run fast and get back to work."
The Paul Short Run is one of the largest intercollegiate cross country meets in the country, featuring three women's races and totaling 136 schools. The Mountaineers are joined by 40 other schools in the women's gold race, including Connecticut, East Carolina, No. 26 Georgia, Maryland, Navy, Rutgers, No. 14 Utah State, Virginia Tech and others.
WVU was victorious in its last outing at the Lock Haven Invitational on Sept. 22, at the West Branch Cross Country Course at the Stern Athletic Complex (6k) in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Redshirt junior Olivia Hill paced West Virginia, earning a second-place finish in 20:59.5 and leading a group of three Mountaineers who finished in the top five in a field of 221 runners.
With the performance, Hill was named the Big 12 Runner of the Week on Tuesday, WVU's second conference honor of the season.
Redshirt junior Candace Jones placed third in her season debut at Lock Haven, crossing the finish line in 21:15.9, while freshman Hannah Lipps took fifth in 21:43.6. Redshirt freshman Marianne Abdalah (21:58.1) and freshman Linda Jebet (22:21.1) finished sixth and 11th, respectively.
The Mountaineers earned 27 team points in the win, their second of the season. It marked the team's first multi-win campaign since 2011.
WVU last competed at the Paul Short Run in 2016. Redshirt senior Jillian Forsey placed fourth at that race, finishing in 20:14, while the Mountaineers recorded a third-place team finish.
West Virginia has won the Paul Short Run on two occasions, most recently in 2009. Additionally, former All-American Marie-Louise Asselin holds the meet record of 19:38, set in 2008.
The Mountaineers are ranked No. 6 in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Regional Rankings.
