MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After inclement weather ended last week's VCU Invitational, the West Virginia University golf team will open the 2018-19 season at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday.
Wake Forest will host East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Louisville, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Yale and the Mountaineers at the Old Town Club. Golfers will tee off in tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. on Monday and will play 36 continuous holes on the par-70, 6,966-yard course. They'll then resume play on Tuesday, again starting at 7:30 a.m. for the final round.
West Virginia is paired with Maryland and Loyola, with tee times starting at 8:45 a.m.
Matthew Sharpstene, Max Sear, Kurtis Grant, Mark Goetz and Etienne Papineau will represent the Mountaineers. The same lineup was slated to play in the VCU Invitational.
"We're looking forward to finally opening up the season at Wake Forest," coach Sean Covich said. "The Old Town Club will be a special treat for our guys. It's a classic course with very challenging greens, and this Perry Maxwell design will offer a variety of different shots to access hole locations. Our iron play, wedge play and putting will need to be sharp to score well this week."
The 2018-19 season marks WVU's first time at the tournament. However, the Mountaineers do boast a connection to Wake Forest. Assistant coach Jay Woodward's brother, Woody, was a member of the Demon Deacons' golf team from 2013-17.
This season marks the second consecutive that West Virginia's season opener was canceled due to a hurricane. The 2017-18 opener, The Invitational at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island in South Carolina, was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. Coincidentally, the Mountaineers went on to win their 2018 season-opening tournament, taking top honors at the Janney VCU Shootout.
