Abraham Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After scoring a game-winning goal and giving the Mountaineers their first road victory of the 2018 season, senior forward Hannah Abraham of the West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Tied 1-1 at Clemson on Sept. 7, Abraham headed in a free kick from goalkeeper Rylee Foster in the 80th minute to push WVU to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers at Riggs Field. The goal, her first of the season, was Abraham's team-best seventh career game-winner.

The Mountaineers (2-2-3) have now earned at least one nonconference victory in an opponent's home venue each season since 2015 and 17 times in program history.

The team is back home for a pair of contests this week. WVU hosts Boston University on Thursday, Sept. 13, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, before Saint Francis (Pa.) comes to town on Sunday, Sept. 16. The matches are set to begin at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

This Week in Women's Soccer: The Mountaineers close their nonconference slate with a pair of matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … WVU plays host to Boston University in a Gold Rush match on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m., and Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. … the first 500 fans Thursday night will receive a gold shaker and a foam finger … additionally, it's WVU Faculty/Staff night, and free admission will be given to all WVU faculty and staff members who show their WVU employee I.D. … Sunday is Youth Soccer Day, and fans who wear a youth soccer jersey will earn free admittance … the first 250 fans in attendance will receive a WVU jersey koozie, and a free postgame clinic for children ages 13 and under will follow the match.

Last Week in Women's Soccer: The Mountaineers (2-2-3) earned their first road victory of the season with a 2-1 win at Clemson on Sept. 7, at Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina … a free kick from junior goalkeeper Rylee Foster in the 80th minute sparked WVU's game-winner, as senior forward Hannah Abraham timed her run perfectly and headed the ball in for her team-best seventh career game-winner … sophomore midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel put WVU on the board first in the 41st minute, connecting on a shot just above the penalty line for her first career goal … freshman forward Alina Stahl assisted on the goal, her first career helper … Clemson evened the score at 1-1 in the 68th minute … the WVU defense denied the Tigers a shot through the first 33 minutes and allowed just seven shots all match, two on-goal, and no corner kicks … the Mountaineers finished with a 15-7 edge in shots and forced CU into four saves, three in the first half … WVU finished with six corner kicks.

Notes: With the win, WVU has now earned at least one nonconference victory in an opponent's venue each season since 2015 and 17 times in program history … the Mountaineers improved to 2-0 over the Tigers … Foster's assist was her first career point … WVU denied an opponent a corner kick seven times in 2017.

This Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia (2-2) opens the week at Maryland tonight, at 7 p.m. ET, in College Park, Maryland … WVU then returns home to host St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. ET, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … tickets are available at WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800 WVU GAME … it is Scout Night, and all scouts who wear their Boy/Girl Scout badges will receive free admission … the match also is an opportunity for Kids Club members to pick up their t-shirts.

Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers suffered a 1-0 loss at UCF on Friday night … sophomore goalkeeper Steven Tekesky made a career-best 10 saves in the loss … WVU was out-shot 18-5, while UCF had an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal … junior defender Pascal Derwaritsch led the team with two shots, and senior midfielder Joey Piatczyc, sophomore defender Kevin Morris and sophomore forward Tsubasa Takada all had one shot, which came on goal.

Notes: Tekesky's 10 saves on Friday night at UCF are tied for the eighth-most in a single match in program history … he is the first Mountaineer goalkeeper to post double-digit saves since Alec Boerner was credited with 11 in 2015, at Princeton … Tekesky leads the Mid-American Conference with 21 saves, 5.25 saves per game and an .875 save percentage, while he is second with a 0.760 goals-against average … Piatczyc leads the MAC with four assists and junior midfielder Ethan Shim has scored a league-best three goals … Piatczyc and Shim are tied for No. 2 in the conference with 1.50 points per game and six points.

This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia (4-5) returns home for the first time in two weeks, wrapping up the bulk of its nonconference slate by welcoming Morehead State (8-2), Penn (2-5) and Wake Forest (3-6) to the WVU Coliseum, on Sept. 14-15, for the Mountaineer Classic, which is in memory of loyal Mountaineer fan Roy Bucklew … the Mountaineers open play with the Eagles on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. … WVU will host a book/school supply drive for the opening-match of the two-day tournament … fans who bring books and/or school supplies to donate to the Morgantown Public Library are eligible for a discounted ticket ($2) … WVU will then kick off Saturday's doubleheader event with free doughnuts and coffee to the first 100 fans, as the Mountaineers take on Penn at 11 a.m. … West Virginia will return to the court later that evening, as the squad goes head-to-head with Wake Forest at 7 p.m. … the first 250 fans will receive a free t-shirt, and the second autograph session of the year will follow the match … additionally, Mountaineer Kid's Club t-shirts can be picked during the evening matchup with the Demon Deacons.

Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers made their way back to Morgantown following a 2-1 weekend at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament, held on FGCU's campus at Alico Arena, in Ft. Myers, Florida … sophomore defensive specialist Lindsay Proctor and freshman middle blocker Kristina Jordan earned all-tournament team honors for their efforts at the two-day event … the Mountaineers started off with a 3-0 sweep over Western Illinois Friday afternoon … West Virginia returned to the court Saturday morning, dropping a three-set match to Albany … despite the loss, West Virginia managed to bounce back in its final tilt of the weekend, topping host Florida Gulf Coast in a five-set thriller for the win later that evening … the Mountaineers played in their first five-set match of the year, taking the match from Eagles in set scores of 29-27, 11-25, 26-24, 10-25 and 15-13 … junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans lead the squad with 26 kills on the weekend, while freshman setter Lacey Zerwas dished out a team-high 59 assists … sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo led the blocking efforts with 12 total blocks, while Proctor dug 34 balls in three matches, including a career-high 21 digs in the win vs. FGCU.

Notes: The Mountaineers are eight wins away from collecting their 700th win in program history … West Virginia currently holds a 692-727 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974 … as a team, West Virginia is hitting .138, while outblocking its opponents, 83.0-62.5 … Evans leads the team with 2.45 kills per set, followed by freshman outside hitter Kristin Lux with 2.38 … Proctor leads the floor defense with 104 digs for 3.25 per set, while DeMeo leads the blocking efforts with 38 total blocks, averaging 1.46 per set to rank second in the Big 12 Conference behind K-State's Macy Flowers … as of Sept. 6, DeMeo ranked seventh in the nation in blocks per set.

This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers are off this week ... the team next competes on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Lock Haven XC Open in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.

Last Week in Cross Country: WVU earned a fifth-place finish at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 7 ... redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills led WVU with an 11th-place showing, finishing the Blue-White Golf Course (6k) in 21:28 ... two other Mountaineers finished in the top 30, as redshirt sophomore Antigone Archer finished 20th in 22:07, while freshman Hannah Lipps took 21st in 22:08 ... sophomore Bree Warren (33rd - 22:20) and redshirt freshman Marianne Abdalah (42nd - 22:41) also scored for WVU.

Notes: The Spiked Shoe Invitational was the first of three trips to Penn State for WVU this season ... the team returns to University Park for the Penn State National Open on Friday, Oct. 12, and again for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday, Nov. 9 ... WVU has raced at the Blue-White Course 10 times since 2014 ... Wills' performance marked a course personal record.

This Week in Golf: West Virginia opens the 2018-19 season at the Janney VCU Shootout on Sept. 17-18, in Richmond, Virginia … VCU will host the event at The Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Course … the Mountaineers enter as the defending champions, marking the first time in program history they return to an event after winning the previous season.

Last Season in Golf: The West Virginia golf team posted its best season to date in year three of its reintroduction … the Mountaineers claimed team titles at the Janney VCU Shootout and the Martin Downs Intercollegiate … the team also posted runner-up finishes at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational, the Furman Intercollegiate and Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate … WVU posted a win-loss record of 83-66-2 to finish with a .563 winning percentage, a tally that has more than doubled since the program's first season in 2015-16 … West Virginia also posted its first-ever top-100 ranking, capping the season at No. 90 via GolfStat … the Mountaineers have improved in the classroom as well, posting a team GPA of 3.16 for an improvement of 0.41 since 2015-16 … the team also claimed its best-ever finish at the 2018 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship, defeating K-State to finish ninth.

Notes: West Virginia returns four of five golfers from last season's Big 12 Championship squad … Max Sear and Tristan Nicholls can become the program's first four-year letterwinners in more than 30 years … Sear earned Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar accolades for his efforts on the course and in the classroom … the team was named an 18Birdies All-Academic Team by the GCAA … five Mountaineers earned Academic All-Big 12 honors, while Logan Perkins was named to the Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team … freshman Kurtis Grant is the lone new addition to the team … West Virginia will highlight the season by hosting the 2019 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship at The Greenbrier in April.
